I drove 150 miles to pick up a rich guy's Audi R8 so he could have me trailer it 10 miles to drop it off at the service center. His usually guy was busy so his usual guy recommended me. It cost him plenty but he didn't seem to mind. As long as my equipment was top notch, the trailer enclosed, and me discreet he was willing to pay whatever. I charged him whatever and we were both happy.

You know that Kalifornia exists in an alternative economic universe, correct?

First year at Air & Auto Classic show near VA Beach (private airfield filled with operable warbirds in Pungo) there was one guy with a very nice right hand drive MG TD who chatted with us TD replica guys. Next year he brought a 356 Cabriolet. Year after it was a 300 SL Mercedes Gullwing and a twin convertible.

I asked about them. "I'm just the mechanic and caretaker," he told me. "The owner lives in Australia." No names, please.

Anyway it's not just in California.

@jncspyder isn’t it nice to see the cars being driven and enjoyed 👍🤙

P.S. Did some checking on that $1.4 million bungalow I posted above. Apparently, flippers bought it for $800K four months ago, did what's generously maybe $100K in sprucing up, and are looking for a cool half mil in profit for their four months of work.

So, California is still the land of opportunity. And I'm guessing it's the opportunists who are snapping up most of the classic Cobras and Speedsters.

You guys should look further afield for value housing. I've been absent from this site for a couple of months getting my place ready for sale. Anyone looking for a holiday home in good 'ol NZ?   Here's what $1M US could get you.....  https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/pr...h/listing/3668809756

Fantastic place!
The garden shed looks very well finely crafted by possible Hobbit standards. I thought it was an entrance to the underground parking...
Where is the garage for the Speedster/Spyder?
What is the purpose of the horizontal cables to the left of the door on the retaining wall?

@DW i love New Zealand....i've been there...i spent about a month between Auckland & Raglan (a world class surf spot & ultra cool place on the west coast on the  tasman sea)...it's called N ZED by the locals...and i had some crazy thoughts about packing up and moving there...and here's a couple FUN FACTS about N ZED....1. unlike the USA, you CAN NOT just show up and stay without PAPERS and proof you can ASIMILATE & FEND FOR YOURSELF ie: a needed trade VISA or LOTS of lotto winnings $$$$...they will KICK YOU OUT eventually without the proper permission documents   2. there are ZERO SNAKES (not the SHELBY type, the SLITHERING type) in N ZED....unlike australia where there are lots of POISONOUS spiders & snakes which are absolutely deadly....but LOTS of sheep & lots of FERAL ANIMALS ie; cats & goats that have decimated lots of native species including their national flightless bird the KIWI 3. ALL the HARRY POTTER films were filmed in N ZED...it is truly a magical place   if you can afford it, it's an option to what this country is becoming under a certain questionable leadership we have at the moment...sorry, but i just had to add that...taboo as it might be  just as always IMHO

I'm sure that 1200 sq ft chicken coop got the old "whitewashed shiplap and gray vinyl floors treatment". A sliding barn door or two, white cabinets, and a repurposed butcher-block table. If they got super-ambitious, they blew out all the 1st floor interior walls for that HGTV-ready "open concept". There's some sign painted on what looks like driftwood (which is really laminate and particle board) hung somewhere in the kitchen that has some sassy saying on it.

Bonus points if neither of the bedrooms (as an aside - how are there two? Are they phone booth sized?) have doors.

@americanworkmule those horizontal cables are part of a fold down washing/drying line!  I'm off to visit Hobbiton in Matamata later next month to get some architectural ideas for my next place.......

@Stan Galat the cost of housing here has been on the rise for the past two years to the point of un-sustainability and is now heading down.  If I'd sold last year it would have been worth maybe 30-40% more! (but it's wasn't finished).

The house has been a labour of love for the past nine years, now its time to move and build a REAL garage for the Speedster!

@jncspyder I can attest to all your observations about N ZID.  I've been here for 17 years now and loved every minute of it.   There's so much here I haven't yet seen and it's a perfect place to visit or live, especially as there's no wildlife wanting to kill you!

Stan, you're missing out on a promising career in California real estate. You scored a '98' on your qualification exam. Here are the results:

HGTV open concept:

PGPalaceOpenPlan

Whitewashed look and white cabinets:

PGPalaceWhitewashed

Gray vinyl floors:

PGPalaceGreyFloor

But you have to remember, at 1200 sq. ft. this is a small space. So they had to combine two of your suggestions into one....uh, what's the realtor term...oh right — into one feature. They took one of the old bedroom doors, did the sliding barn door thing with it, while eliminating a real bedroom door all at once:

PGPalaceTrendyDoor

We had to knock off a few points because you left out the faux wood-look vinyl flooring. But very impressive for an HVAC guy from flyover country. You could definitely do this.

Thanks, Mitch,

But I feel like the test ought to be harder. The design-cues are pure "flippery 101".

By "gray vinyl floor" I did mean gray Luxury Vinyl Plank, so may I please have some extra credit? I'm aware I'll lose a point because it's knotty alder vinyl "plank look" and not weathered/whitewash gray, but it's the not-all-that luxury plank* to which I was referring.

I'll take a deduct on the epoxy floor in the garage. I didn't see that one coming and that's a truly nice feature... unless it isn't polyaspartic (never mind - it looks like it's not).

Unless there is a gorgeous view (not from some place nearby - from sitting in the living room, like DW's place) - that's a $150K house in this part of the world. 5 years ago, it would have been $120K.

*I love the stuff and have used it in the apartment above the garage and in the rooms below grade here, all through mom's house and I'll lay it throughout both floors of the 1873 house across the street. It's functional, easy, and doesn't look completely hideous if you spend enough - but "luxury" is kind of a stretch.

Recently wokeness has impacted the language of real estate as Wolfgang's post reflects.

In some quarters the term "Primary Bedroom" has replaced "Master Bedroom" as the latter has been deemed offensive. Of course the same is true for "Master Bathroom".

All other bedrooms have been deemed secondary.

A different form of bedroom hierarchy I guess.

Bedrooms have feelings too. Is there a "safe bedroom" for this?

There are reasons for the Corolla-esque color palette.

It's not too likely that anyone able to spend north of a mil on their next house will be moving in here. The target buyer is more likely another wealthy investor looking for some juicy income from a rental property (and more healthy profit at resale in 5-10 years or so when the market bumps the price to maybe $2 mil). Thus, bland, low-maintenance floors, surfaces, and some low-maintenance sticks and twigs that pass for 'landscaping'.

What was built as entry level housing for a young, working-class family in the 1960s has become an investment vehicle for the rich — just like those vehicles from Zuffenhausen we admire. (They may not have been quite 'entry-level' in 1960, but you didn't have to be wealthy to drive one.)

Meanwhile, the rich get richer, the poor look elsewhere for someplace to live.
