I found a chassis that may be viable for my speedster. 1977 standard beetle. Pans look OK and torsion tube/tunnel is just fine. Only problem is that it is a salvaged title and I cant do a VIN search on something like carfax. The car was registered as recently as 9/09 but expired since then and vehicle is inoperable.

What are my options here?

If you have bought it try the D.M.V. and the salvage yard Might be able to have a reversal done ,But as long as you Do get a title salvage or not Hey what is a kit car But a salvaged bug , It's No big deal as long as you record the conversion with the state D.M.V. Inspector (Before) you turn the first bolt on the car so they can start the proper procedures. It varies from state to state But do try to make a safe solid car of it. then when it finished and got it's final inspection your in the clear on every thing but that states emission laws. Most go by the year of the donor. which grandfathers you out of emissions..
If all your using is the pan just plasma cut out the serial plate on the tunnel and find a old rusty rotted out junker with a clear title and switch the plate.

As long as you own both and destroy the unused vehicle buy parting everything out, your still honoring the salvage law by disposing of the unfit car and surrendering the salvage title, and all remaining junk parts. You have one good title and on good car. That's all ya wanted. Cost wise , your not hurting at all so far. If you can find a cheap junker of the same year your setting pretty.

Even better, If you remodel the tunnel at the k frame to make room for better seats, also making it look more genuine by losing the Y part. You will have to remove the serial and put it back in the straighten tunnel anyway . You could flatten it out and use it as a cover over the shift coupler.

I have been working on conversion for that very procedure, for over a year in my head. The E-brake cables will be the only hassle.

Der R veays around this mess.
