I agree with Wolfgang.  Each builder offers a little something different.   Determine your honest budget, then call each of the builders that best match the amount you will be spending.  Once you have it down to a builder or two, post on here that you would like to talk to some owners who have cars from builder x and y.

Good luck in your search!!

And if you are watching your budget, buying used isn't a bad idea either........there are a few reliable folks on this forum, that buy cars, upgrade & tweak them.......and resell for fair prices.  Or original owners who are selling for one reason or another.  I've seen deals from all the major manufacturers, but previously owned cars, advertised for sale on this site.

to the original question I'm going to say depends what you want. If you truly want the best I say get in line at SAS. IMHO Steve builds the best replica. The crazy thing is it's like 15 grand cheaper than a base IM

..however be prepared to wait awhile for your car to be built. I'm 53 now. I ordered mine back in '98. (I think I was 40 when I put my first deposit down)...Steve says it's comin along nicely and should be finished sooner than later..i kid..it's only been 9 months

No, Intermeccanica is better than SAS.  I know because I'm an expert, and my opinion is the best.

Popcorn, anyone?

The original poster touched one of the tender spots on this site. It's ground that has been fought over for as long as I've been coming here (and that's almost 13 years now).

I'll accept that "best" means different things to different people, but I'll not accept MooseX's analysis of the lay of the land. I'll happily put my car beside any other speedster (actual or hypothetical), and see how they compare. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own facts.

Regardless, I will submit that having various camps pee circles around the trees of their respective choices is counterproductive. As was so graciously stated early on in this thread, all of the various builders have their place in the hobby. Every guy is going to need to do a cost/benefit analysis on their own to determine what is "best" for them.

There's no substitute for driving the cars for one's self, and visiting the shops of various builders-- and there's nothing to be gained in banging the drum of your personal decision on the internet, and posting it as settled fact.

Gee thanks, Stan, for bringing us back to boring reality.

Seriously though, he's right.  "Best" means different things to different people.  It also depends not only on the original manufacturer, but what further changes are done to the car through it's lifetime.  Stan's car is pretty fantastic from what I've heard, but much of that is due to his own hard work.

The best advice is to attend the largest Speedster gathering you can (Carlisle or the annual west coast get together) and make direct comparisons.  Then figure out a realistic budget and do some research within that context.

If I can draw from an old college philosophical Logic class:

Being the BEST would make something very popular and desirous to own.

Therefore, the manufacturer for which there have been the most produced would

naturally be the BEST.

I rest my case - CMC is by far the best!  LOL.  In their hay day (late 80's) they produced over 300 kits a month, employeed 200 people (most probably for telephone sales) and grossed over $12 million a year!
