Hey Guys of the July 12th Canyon Run referred to as "The Mickey Donatello Vicarious Cruise" -

What a great day for a SoCal SOC cruise. The hardcore early birds saw some awesome (and rare) Porsches at C&C and then hooked up for breakfast with the other lazy bastard SOC'ers who slept in.

I hope you all head fun and enjoyed the route we took. Here is a link to some pics I took today. I will e-mail/forward pics to each of you for your files.

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0DaOGrhoxZPgA&emid=sharshar&linkid=link4

Robert - I wil see you tomorrow morning at the PCA Auto-X.

Will - I will hook up with you at the 356 Concourse after I leave the Auto-X. I will buzz your cell when I get on the showgrounds.

Larry - When we got to our Dana Point destination we were worried about you (and the Gelcoat Wonder) and we didn't have your cell number (next time). Anyway, when I left the group at Dana Point, I backtracked to where we thought you peeled off formation (Los Osos & Antonio). When I got there and couldn't find you or your car, I figured you made it back the the freeway OK. Hope you had a good time.

Dave - I was a pleasure to meet you and see that you scored on a nice car. Hope you had fun.

Mike - I bet your son thinks you are the COOLEST dad in the world for taking him on today's cruise. Hope you both can join future cruises as well.

Peace - Out!
No Cory, that's a $20k Porsche engine that just got rebuilt on the white coupe and it was B-E-A-Utiful. Sorry I can't remember his name but what a cool guy and cool addition to our cruise and our club.

That was my first Speedy cruise and I can only say I'm sorry I missed so many in the past. You guys are the greatest and having Jr. on the ride was just the best for me. I think his 'high' was the kids (his peers) on the jetty road in Dana Point standing there and begging for a high five from us all slowly passing by. That was the icing on the hundreds of lookers and honkers and "thumbs up" cake, which I know we all eat up with delight. Sure it's a big ego thing for us, but what a fun thing to witness as you're walking down the street. If I had a bumper sticker it might say "you think the cars are cool, you should meet these guys inside!"

Mike Jr. had a funny in the hills as we passed a biker in the curves. "Dad, he was probably thinking, like, when the first one came by 'hey what a cool old car' and then 'wow what a coincidence there's another' and then maybe after, like, 7 of us he probably thought he was in some sort of 'Twilight Zone' where all the cars in the world had changed into Speedsters."

Not a bad world to live in...

It was worth gettin up early! Nice cruise with Dave up to C&C! There were just too many rare, beautiful P-Cars to see. It was great meeting with Dave and talking old cars and old days. I did get a strange feeling when we would be looking at a Carrera 2 or a perfect 1967 911S Targa, I would ask the owner a question like " Is that original paint?" or " Is it a matching number car?" and Dave would always ask " Do you know where the bathroom is"? He got some strange looks! Dave, Intermeccanica offers an option that you can retro fit. It is an Arrowhead gallon jug. I really get a lot of use out of mine! We then went to Knollwoods and hooked up with the SOC group. It was nice to meet the younger generation! Desi, your son does actually talk. Just not when you are around! Jim got us on a great course through the canyons of the OC! I particularly enjoyed convoying with a bunch of Garbage Transfer semi-trucks! It was great seeing all for breakfast and some nice speedie roads! The total commitment award, presented to the owner/driver showing the greatest commitment to "the madness", and also the possibility that he should be "Committed" for his behavior goes to Mike for working on his car till the wee hours, resulting in the front bumper being on upside down! What a Classic! It is like a story from the 50's or 60's when guys worked all night on a 356, drove it to a race, and blew away the competition! Mike & Mike Jr. showing the Stoke!
Man, I'm real sorry I missed that cruise, it sounds like you guys had a great day. I buzzed up to Dana Point this morning and pulled in on the grass expecting to see some other plastic porsches, as I pulled in I was dirrected into the the show area next to metal P-cars. I shut my car off and was getting ready to walk off and check out the show when running and telling me with a raised voice a guy in a red 356 reg shirt "You cant park on the grass thats not a real 356 and this is a 356 show" (and I thought I was at Good Guys Nationals, wow I was surprized. His show of power was a little un-needed as the show is only soo big, he could have just walked up to me and asked me to move it). I played it off saying "I thought it was kind of strange that the other guys were telling me to park my plastic one with all the rust buckets" (he did'nt find it too funny and told me to go park over in the back area near the new porsches) To make it even more funny he followed me to make sure my little plastic porsche was parked far enough away from all the real ones so that my car would not infect the pure breads :) Even parked in the back my little fo-porsche recieved a lot of attention and pictures being taken. I've been a member of the Porsche club of America for almost 20 years (mainly for the driving events I'm a driving instructor and get more then my share of track time) and I still can't figure out why Porsche guys are so diffrent from regular car guys. They are truely eccentric and have a huge issue with power strugles. I like the looks of the cars but I can do with out some of the owners. It seems that you would want to embrace the plastic Porsches, give them an area to park there cars. Hell we are all there because we truely like the cars looks and performance. Hell I could afford an original, however I'd have to be like the rest of these guys with there 100k garage kept jewls and would'nt be able to drive it without the worry that someone would run into it or steal it.
On my drive back home down the 5 I reflected on all of the cars I own and have owned and realized that this little plastic porsche is the one I like the most of all. I guess some guy just define them selves by status symblos while the rest of us enjoy life and lifes little plastic pleasures...............

I can't wait to meet you guys and go for a little cruise or two.
Kevin, I hit the show also. My friend John Kelley was parked with the "REAL!" 356 cars in his old IM. John and his IM have a pretty nice "patina" so he managed to slip one over on the Gestapo. Lot's of beautiful cars, probably almost as nice as yours and mine! Sorry I missed meeting you. I saw Dave O'brien and his lovely wife there also. Great day for a car show!
I would have told him to F'OFF and walked away. Remember when we had posts of what to say if someone asked if it was a real Porsche? Lets come up with what to say when a 'P' Guy disses you at a car show.

1- My real one is at home, I wouldn't bring it here.
2- No hablo stupid, sorry!
3- Point to his wife and say, glad to see you brought your mom here.

I checked out the fibertub in the back. It was real nice, the seatbacks had this great cracked leather, other than the tunnel and e-brake it fit in beautifully. I looked for the owner to compliment him on his great rep but he was not around.

It seems there was room up there for us but these guys really work and pay hard on these metal beauty's and I would feel weird up there with my fibertub.

There were 2 Convt D's and I talked to the owner of one. He was a really nice guy and he told me a lot of owners have reps to drive along with the garage queens. Fernando and his wife said they do drive their
D all the time.

Cheers
Dave

Sometimes, the curiosity gets the better of guys who really have spent time and attention on metal cars. It's cool when that happens, like the coupe that joined the road adventure out there in SoCal this weekend -- in my opinion, they 'get it.'
Still, had I been there, I might've asked that guy to tone it down a bit, moved, and then opened her up for the public.
It's cool when the unsolicited compliments happen, too. Last year at my Dad's house, the St. Louis PCA chapter president went for a drive in my car, 'knowing' it was an unpapered mutt, and came back with a great review. He wrote about it, and its uncultured history, declaring it to be a darn good ride. He even added a couple comments here, endorsing the spirit we're all about on this site.
There was a commercial announcement in there, too, but hey.

If you look closely at the blue Roadster in Dave's picture, take note of the "Fake Rudge Knockoffs" that the owner created from "real" 356 C hubcaps with "Fake" spinners glued on. I spoke with the owner about his "wheels" and he was very candid about his "replica wheels". A magnetic car owner with a sense of humor. I love em!
Great story Cory. That guy is a real "car guy". I had a twin turbo carrera 4 for about three months, it was a fast and exciting car to drive but it did not have that thrill. Don't get me wrong it made your heart race but untill you were behind the wheel you did'nt think about it. Not like my little plastic tub that I come up with reasons to take it out for a drive.

"Those racks" something else and no one was telling them to put them where people could not see them.

Ya, the "real rust buckets" nice and I've done my fair share of correct cars and yes it is hard to find all the original parts to make the car 100% correct. But I walked around looking at these "buckets" and noticed that quite a few of them had more then their fair share of VW and None vw aftermarket parts on them. I also listened to some of the conversations that the less then puddle deep guys were having about their cars and their competors cars and just laughed. I would think that if you've gotten to the level of being able to afford a 100k car you would be able to not only afford to build the car correctly (if no other reason then to make your investment 100% solid) but would be able to leave the school yard sandbox stuff where it belongs.

Oh well nice day for a drive and great cars to look at. I'm not letting some guy with the mentalty of a 2 year old ruin it.

Lets go cruising........
Jim,
Thanks for spear-heading the first "Mickey Donatello Vicarious Cruise"! I took a moment @ noon while slippin back an espresso or two and closed my eyes, I almost felt as if I were there.
It seems as if everyone had a blast.
There is something about looking at pictures of the west coast events that just screams to me "You belong here!". I've been out there twice and loved it!
I swear I'm gonna find a reason to get out there again. My next car purchase will definitely be from Sunny So Cal.

I would have LOVED to be the one that schmoe at the 356 Show came running up to. I live for that $hit.

You guys have all the fun.

And that's why I hate you all. ;)
Thats ok, I don't have to lower my IQ to his level and not be able to see the future of the cars I love soo much.

Hell this will never happen to our cars...

Ours will float duh....

Treasures from the deep. Kevin the one rep I saw was not yours now that I see your pics. Your tub looks great. We need to check it out with mine an 82' IM kit that sat in a Vancouver garage until the owner took it back to IM in 92' to build. An 82'kit and 92'turnkey.
What I mean is that I have an old IM so you can compare it to yours for clues of origin.

Chrissa and I noticed how quiet all the metal 356's were with the stock mufflers. Quite a few took off after 12:30. I saw some interesting bends and alterations to the tailpipes coming from the mufflers in order to clear the back. Gives me ideas to quiet mine down some but I do enjoy setting off alarms as I drive in the hood!

Off to start the week
Cheers
Dave
Sooo kewl to hook up with the SOCers, really kewl that a few brought their son's, stoked to meet the new faces and see the crew.
Too bad about the attitude of some at the 356 show, like my house I open it up to my friends and family, I use it- when I jump in Tufftub I like to run and have fun and smile, I bet that guy doesn't smile to much -lifes way too short- I choose too smile!!! Cabanaboy -
Tufftubb is everything the purist hate - so why do we get smiles from 99.9% of the people we pass ??
I love driving my mongrel abomination!

I ran into a guy at a car show who was oh so pleased that I had a placard on the car that read '57 356 "replica". for some reason that gave him a sense of well being. Even someone with cataracts wouldn't mistake mine for the genuine article.

I just zip past those snooty bast**ds at 95mph with a 10 tooth grin.

I got plenty of attention at the PCA auto-X in my speedie. Next time I'm going to take that little mongrel out on the track to see what she will do.

I remember getting passed a long while back by one of those 993's or something with the engine cover spoiler up (I always think they look like they've got some sort of balloon under them when they're up).

Anyway, the driver (older dude with greasy gray hair and a bent nose) gives me this nasty look and then turns to look straight ahead (and I'm thinking, "like, what the hell did I do??").

His right-seater, a particularly foxy-looking lady, turns toward me and gives me a big wink and a smile, then the smile disappears as she turns straight ahead again.

If she were in a Speedster, she'd still be smiling, I bet'cha...(but not with him!)
