Cory, maybe you could spend Thursday night somewhere near Santa Monica/Malibu so you don't have such a long drive Friday morning  JUST to get to rendezvous.  Then meet up with us 10:00 Friday morning? @Cory McCloskey

@MusbJim - Interested in meeting up at my house prior to the drive up to Malibu like last year?? The wifey might end up driving straight to SLO (not sure yet).

Sounds like the plan, Brian! I think we met at your place at 9:00. SOCers Al & Heidi Gallo will be here from Cape Cod to attend SLO and tour the state afterwards. Al will probably ride with me in Speedster while Heidi and Ginny follow in their rental car.

Looking forward to catching up with you & Monica (and Natalie, of course!).

I’d love to do that, Jim, but distance and climate will conspire against me...

like a tiny Donner Party of one, I must carefully time my departure for California in order to avoid dying along the way. 

I wish I could leave Arizona earlier on Thursday, but I’ll be on the air until just after noon. If I were to set out at that hour, I’d be crossing four hours of AZ/CA desert at  105°-110°.

 If I wait until later in the day, I’ll be fighting a desert floor that’s still unbelievably hot, plus a setting sun in my eyes for hours and hours, and the fatigue that comes from having been up since 2:45 AM. 

 I can’t say that I haven’t been dopey enough, on many, many days, to drive in that sort of heat, but never for that long. 

 So, since I typically must wake up at that early hour anyway (and I have Friday off), I will simply plop myself into that Speedsters seat at 3:15 a.m., and enjoy the desert in the cool of the night, before meeting you fine people in Malibu around 930! 

I’d dearly love to spend Thursday night in a Topanga Canyon AirB&B, and roll out for some early-a.m. carving before seeing all your handsome faces, but, alas...

Sounds like a great drive, @Cory McCloskey! I pack unshelled sunflower seeds with me when driving any distance. I'm going to Carlisle this year (I fly to Detroit on Wednesday!!!!) but would love to hit the West Coast gathering next year and make your (and everybody else's) acquaintance! Al

Camarillo to Solvang (85 miles – 1hr 40 minutes) 

Enter ramp for 101 North
Continue 101 north to Santa Barbara and to Solvang
Approaching Solvang, take exit for 246 Lompoc/Solvang (Exit 140-A)
Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 246 to Chevron or Mobil station. Rest stop & top off fuel.

Solvang to SLO (75 miles – 1 hr 30 minutes)

Enter ramp for 101 North
Continue 101 North to SLO
Approaching SLO, exit Grand Ave/Cal Poly (Exit 203 D) turn RIGHT onto Grand.
Continue to traffic signal, Monterey, turn RIGHT onto Monterey.
Continue ¼ mile on Monterey, Quality Suites will be on LEFT

4:00 PM - approximate ETA at Quality Suite Hotel

4:01 PM - SOC shenanigans begin!

MUSBJIM:    Are you going to need a translation look-up sheet for your right seater?  He can be much worse than me, at times - those mid-staters speak a language of their own!   Just remember, anything really good can be “Wicked Good!”  Beyond that, you’re onyerown.  

Just remember that Don Orsillo, the play-by-play guy for the San Diego Padres, used to do Play-By-Play for the Red Sox and you can unnahstan HIM!

For he most part it's:

Friday - Arrive at the hotel and start drinking

Saturday - Have breakfast, meet at the Vet's Hall next door, drive until lunch, have lunch, drive until it gets later, meet back at the hotel, drink, dinner, drink, raffle, drink

Sunday - Breakfast, pack, go home

I know exactly the spot. I drive that stretch most weekends on my Sunday morning drive

101. Can someone call us 5-minutes out? We r going to be coming from Simi

@ltltub Mary, you can meet us at our stop in Camarillo. We will be at the McDonald's (around 11:30) or so. It's just off Los Posas and just north of the 101 Fwy.

As you're driving from Simi, exit on Los Posas, turn RIGHT onto Los Posas and get in left lane for a LEFT at signal (Daily Dr.). Dan & Shannon Stewart will be there in their Silver Speedster in the back parking lot.
