Today is the "rehearsal" day for the Marine Corps. Air Show here in Beaufort this weekend. This is a very big deal here, as they're expecting 100,000 people to show up to see the Blue Angels and a whole lot of other stuff.

As it happens, I had to drive past the end of one of the runways and there were a bunch of cars parked in a large field nearby watching the acrobatics in the sky from all sorts of aircraft.

As I was watching, I noticed a pair of parked motorcycles with all manner of packs all over them as their riders stood nearby taking pictures of the planes flying close overhead. Then I noticed the European license plats on the bikes and couldn't resist wandering over to say hello.

I turns out that they are Kjell and Karin Jansson from Sweden. They left Sweden last October on a round-the-world motorcycle tour by riding, first, across all of Russia, then down to the intersection of Russia, China and Korea, then on to the Orient, then to the West Coast of North America and down through California. They also fit in a side trip to Australia and New Zealand somewhere along the line. They toured the US South during the Winter, spending the deep winter in Florida and have been up and down the East Coast, seen a space shuttle launch and a WHOLE lot more. Thus far, they've traveled 48,000+ miles in seven months. They are writing a blog in both Swedish and English which can be found here:

If it comes up in Swedish, then look for the American Flag on the lead page and click it to translate to English.

What an amazing adventure!

Tonight they will be in Savannah on their way down the coast to Miami to catch up with the "Norwegian Epic" cruise ship which is booked to take them and their bikes to Barcelona to continue their trip through Europe until next October, when they will be back in Sweden.

And I thought driving to the West Coast and back was a big trip - which it IS! This trip is off the charts!

I suppose being independently wealthy would make a number of things possible. Holy-moly, what a trip. the only harder way to do this would be to walk it all, huh?. My butt is aching just thinking about this trip. Not sure I'd want to be that wet and wind blown for that long. Maybe after a few months, you just get used to it. As it is, I am in some quandry to understand how I would survive more than 24 hrs in airplanes trying to get to New Zealand sometime next year.
