I recently finished an engine hangar that uses the stock Suby engine mounts in my beetle test car. I think it would be easier in a Suby powered Speedster. I'll add that to the list of developments.
Just installed the new IMI-101N starter. Wow...what a difference. Smaller than the Autostick but cranks easily, hot or cold. Everything as advertised. Amazing shipping speed too. Ordered last Friday evening and it arrived in Upstate NY before noon today...by mail.

Yeah, that IMI does do the trick.......
Giday, Danny. I need to bug you about the Megajolt for a bit. Do you have any readout or whatever telling you the base limp home mode of advance BTDC that is in your setup? The paperwork says 10 deg but I want to compare apples to apples with you if need be. After the base of 10 deg., could you please offer up the range of degrees BTDC as the rpm increases that you see? Did you tweak your advance with the Megajolt or just leave things alone? I found out that little black tit sticking out the side of the box is a vacuum fitting. Is your's hooked up and if so where, pls. ? Thanks.
Got her sorted out, Lads. The Megajolt is running fine so please ignore the previous post. This thing now starts, runs and pulls very well. I'm happy with it. Total cost is $3,146 and that includes a spare engine and surplus VW Golf rad which did not get used. No idea how many hours into it.
Congrats, David! Can't wait to see you burning up the road in Carlisle next May.

David what did the starter cost you... had a look and at $500+ I thought it was a bit expensive

Yep..Carlisle for sure. Not sure about the Keys though, Francine's making noises about New Orleans. I said hey...that's only two days drive from there to Tucumcari. Oh, no ! what are we thinking ? I paid $248 for the IMI-101N direct from mfg. I ordered it Friday and had it in on Monday. Shipping was only $17.
Way to go David! Does this mean we'll be seeing a video of it running and you driving it soon?
Nah, the glossies will come later, Rich. I can't seem to post any video from my GoPro camera anywhre anyhow. Still haven't even put the hood back on it. A neighbour says he'll get it into the Mits dealership he works for soon and get it painted though. Then that'll make the interior look like complete shit and away we go. They say it may snow up here soon so that'll slow the driving down for sure. Carlisle coming...
David...it just sounds like madness I tell you!
David, when you changed from rear rad. to front, what radiator did you use?

Same rad, Bill. Jeep Cherokee..not sure of year and it measures about 12" x 32". I added one 10" aftermarket thermostat activated fan. I could add more.

David, if you add another fan, just use a relay to activate both fans from the same thermoswitch. Although you could get a fan with a different sensor, say one comes on at 180 and the other at 195?
Thanks for that, Danny. Not sure if I'm doing it right, but the Soob stat opens at 172 and the rad fan stat opens at 180F. Both are cool settings but I'm thinking better early than late. I'll likely add a second fan if for no other reason than just to have a spare onboard. I'm thinking to wire it straight to a dash mounted switch for trials
and see how the system performs in real heat before committing to another rad fan stat. A second stat could be easily installed in the same stat housing. We'll see. Best of the Season to all.

I finally got the Megajolt pics up for viewing. The first general shot shows the Laptop hooked up to the running Soob engine and the second shot shows a closeup of the screen running. Dead simple to adjust timing on the fly. Next I'll fine tune the carb and then road trial with my buddy Kurtis in the right seat with the laptop online and we can tweak the advance for any dubious rpm and load levels. Looking pretty promising.

I had the opportunity to weigh my engine today and found the results pretty much as expected. 247 lbs including everything on it for it to run including oil and exhaust system but no cooling system.
David,
Did the Buzz Beer help ?

Yes, Chuck...Buzz Beer can lighten the spirits but it can't seem to move the dial on the scales to the left while weighing the Soob. Both seem to be " it is what it is" and I'm ok with that....

Good to hear. Hoping you have fun tuning, I enjoyed doing mine.
I'd like to see a Subaru with Megajolt and dual Webers or Dellortos though, that would be pretty cool.

I agree on the carb idea, Danny and I may go that way one day. The problem might be vertical clearance though because we'd have to marry two types of intake manifolds together. Perhaps that could be done on a bit of angle inboard to solve clearance issues.
247 lbs for the ej22? That doesn't sound too heavy. How much does a fully-dressed Type 1 weigh, again?
EJ22 weight will be around 300-325 lbs. with rad, plumbing, and water weight, depending on the site of the rad, pipe length, etc. Placing the rad up front helps offset rear weight distribution and gives a clean air route.
That's probably a pretty good estimate, Jim. I'm running 2" aluminum tubing from back to front and the liquid just in that would make up about 34 lbs, plus the rad and what's in it, then the heater system. I put in a Jeep Cherokee rad across the front which gets good air and is probably larger than needed but I like to go on the conservative side. I finally got my new heater installed today with a three speed blower. There'll be no shortage of heat.
And there is no shortage of heat. I'm declaring the car road/travel ready now after re-installing the engine. I pulled it a month ago as I had a suspicious head gasket on the right side and it gave me space to clean up a lot of the wiring and adjust the coolant path. I also changed out the exhaust manifold to a turbo version which gave much more ground clearance than the ss aftermarket one. It's almost cured that small stumble I had when transitioning into the second carb barrel. Might have to tweak the jets a bit. Had it out for about 20 miles today, sunny and about zero celcius. The giant Cherokee rad kept the temps down to about 160-170 degrees F. which is lower than I'd want so the 172 F. stat must have been busy. It's looking good right now. 71 days and we're outa here !
