Southeast to Carlisle Caravan

Some of us in the southeastern states are planning a caravan to Carlisle this year. The intent is to arrive Thursday after meeting up in Wytheville, VA, on I-81 on Wednesday. Some of us are coming up from South Carolina (Gordon Nichols and me), and some from east Tennessee (John Hallstrand). There may be others coming and meeting up with us from North Carolina and Georgia. Gordon may also bring along some Cobra guys from the Beaufort area.

I'm beginning to think that it would be a good idea to call up the hotel in Wytheville (John, did you say it was a Hampton or a Holiday Inn?) and reserve some rooms. What say yee? Who all is interested in joining us?

Lane, I don't remember mentioning a motel in Wytheville as I have just passed by the town in the past. I have stayed in Christiansburg in the past on longer trips, such as to Connecticut. It has a nice motel, a Hampton Inn, I think. It's about 40 miles farther north and has a nice Cracker Barrel within easy walking distance. Just a thought.

Understandably this thread has been a bit dormant lately since we have a couple of months yet to go. Still, I'd like to know how many we are likely to have join the caravan. Gordon, I believe that I understand you to be returning to the Great White North a bit early, so you won't be joining us, correct? What about the rest of your Beaufort posse?

Hoss, you got your reservations in Christiansburg yet?

John, Lane can fill you in on his route, but my plan is as follows:

> Wednesday May 16th take I-40 E to I-81 N to Christiansburg, VA.
> arrive Christiansburg late afternoon and spend the night
> leave Christiansburg Thursday May 17th and drive I-81 N to Carlisle
> leave Carlisle Sunday May 20th and drive I-81 S to Christiansburg
> arrive Christiansburg evening and spend the night
> leave Christiansburg Monday May 21st, take I-81 S to I-40 W to home

That's my time table. Hope you can make it as I'm sure you will have a blast.

Along with Hoss' info, Lane will be departing from Charleston, SC via I-26 Northwest to Columbia to pick up I-77 North through Charlotte and on to Wytheville, VA, where he'll catch I-81 North all the way to Carlisle. They'll be stopping overnight in Christiansburg, halfway to Roanoke on I-81 (see Hoss' post) at the Hampton Inn.

There is also talk of bailing from the Interstate and taking some of the twistie mountain roads for a stretch to "give the Speedies their legs".

Day two: Continue up I-81 to Carlisle, ETA to the Ramada is mid afternoon.

Return is most likely the same route, but that'll be decided in Carlisle.
