Vince....I have been wanting a diesel pusher motorhome for a while now, so the time has come to purchase one and there will be no time for Speedie but Iam totally good with that, I thought about it as a tow vehicle, but it would get all messed up with the pits from the road and that would make me sick cause I have taken such good care of that speedie. It will make me happy to see my speedie go to a home that will love it as much as I have :) ~Esther
But Esther, a diesel pusher needs a run-around tow vehicle. The speedster would be PERFECT! Everyone else buys a suzuki samurai or a honda or something to tow behind, but YOU would have the coolest drag along ever - the speedster! Maybe cover the whole front of it with the clear-bra material?

Esther - hope you don't bail out on us when you become "speedster-less". We would miss you. Besides, you're the only west-coast Cuban I know!

Another RVer in our midst. I LOVE that! Esther, Angela is right. Put some diamond shield on it and tow the bugger. What a great toad car. No reason to give up on that top-down beauty! BTW what make & model Diesel? If you need any help checkin out the deal you get PM me: tomdewaltATdewaltsrv.com. I've been in the RV business since I was 9 years old. Also check out www.gorvguide.com

Angela...another reason why it wouldn't work towing the speedie is that there will be times where we would be taken our granddaughter Savanna with us and she still has to use a car seat, she is only 1 year old so it will be a while and besides no seat for her, I wish it was that simple, my pool guy tells me yesterday that he has many friends with RV'S and they all tow Saturn SUV'S and they love it, never been a Saturn kind of girl so I don't know about that one!!! we might just tow nothing at first til we can figure out what we want to buy. Oh well.... Esther

Tom....we are looking at 2008 Monaco- The Diplomat or The Camelot. Serious consideration a 2008 Winnebago- Vectra, our best friends have a 2007 Vectra and we have traveled with them a few times and it sure is a nice bus. Iam still working on Grant on buying us a Prevost, but he tells me when I win the lotto....lol. I bet we end up with the Vectra.

Vince... gas no problem, Grant's truck gets 9 miles to the gallon, we are used to that. Our friend with the Vectra gets the same gas mileage as Grant does with his diesel truck...go figure.

I don't know much about RVs, so maybe Tom can back this up ... I was talking to a guy who bought one a few years old a while back, and his theory was that a used RV with up to five years on it will likely need only new tires and an electrical check-up, but it should be otherwise new if it doesn't have that many miles on it.
He said he saved a pot of money.
Too bad you're 86ing the Speedie. Gonna get a Beetle, at least?
Esther
Nice choices. Just be sure you choose a good servicing dealer. Also although rain is a less important issue to you sunny californians, water damage is the number one issue in any RV. Maintenance is key. Just as in a house there are sealants that can over time get dry and brittle. When they crack water gets in and damege sometimes very expensive damage follows. We wouldn't consider not changing our oil, so make sure you make sealant maintenance part of your routine. A great new machine recently became widely adopted. It's called a Sealtech. What it does is pressurize the RV and then a tech goes around and applies a soapy solution to any and all sealants. Any bubbles where there shouldn't be bubbles and we have a leak. Do this every 6-months (should not be very expensive- we charge $50) and repairs are cheap. Remember the old Framm oil filter adds -"pay me now or pay me later" - same deal. Well that's my advice. Happy to help with more any time. Oh one more thing. Be sure you drive both. Monaco is on a roadmaster chassis. 8-air bags . Winny uses freightliner - 4- bags. My experience is Freightliner issues are often a bigger part of nmy diesel problems than my RV portion. Also expect any diesel to need some sorting time. These are far more complex than a car. It's a house on wheels with all the issues of both. The more expensive, the more complicated the systems and features and the more potentail for issues. Some of which are from just understanding how to work it all. Good lick and I am happy to help - if you need anything just ask.
Vince,
People don't drive their RV every day. The typical RV is driven less than 10k miles per year - often 5k. A diesel like Ester is considering will likely get 10mpg (it's true). 5000 miles at 10mpg is 500 gallons FOR THE YEAR. Even at $5/gallon (GOD FORBID) that's $2500 FOR THE YEAR! Plug in your own numbers and do the math. Hypothetically, If Ester was using a 9 mpg truck (and driving it everyday) so she could tow a big trailer, She might be better to axe the truck and go with the motorhome (instead of a trailer) and replace the truck with a 20mpg everyday car.

Cory,
A 5 year old RV will probably sell for about 60-70% (maybe less) of a new one. As long as it has been used regularly and well maintained, it's a GREAT deal. Problem is few are well-maintained. Most common problem is water damage. Many people only think about it when they want to use it.

ALWAYS buy from a reputable dealer. Boy can I share some horror stories from private purchases.

Esther, Keep that speedy! As soon as I don't have kids to take RVing - I'm towing mine.

Tom...thank you so much for all of your input, very helpful. If I have any other concerns I will PM you, ya know I'm not shy..LOL
I know I should keep the Speedie and eventually tow it behind , my husband is a practical kind of guy and he thinks we should tow something that will at least seat 4 people only because we are never really alone, we are our kids magnet...in an awesome way!!!! Wonderful family times...

Today, we sold the Speedster to a really nice couple, I was extremely happy to see it go to a nice home, for it was my baby.... I will let the new owner's introduce themselves, and they will soon. We really had a blast meeting you all and all of the fun runs we did together, you guys are a great bunch of people and I will miss rallying with the group. It's new venture time for us, but I will still chime in and give you all a hard time, LOL - Happy Motoring...~Esther
