I've already got the Intermeccanica "big trunk", which is much like yours. I've got some ideas for "more".

I made my battery box out of scraps I had laying around.. but you can buy one that has a L__ shaped end and I just bolted it up the passenger side VS bumper bracket . I tucked it in behind the head light tub as high as I could get it.. I'm sure you guys can out do mine .. I even used up some of my leftover beam springs to make the bottom and the front side of it .. Battery goes in from the wheel well and I put side post stubs on the side post to hook jumper cables to it if someone needs a jump .. Its a top post universal Jell cell Batt.
If you get one of the Odyssey gel cells like Mike McKelvey and I have, you can pretty much put it anywhere. No fumes or corrosive gasses, only 14 pounds, and very small. You can carry it in one hand. It's worked for me for about 4 years now.
Lane..Id like to see that battery.. Got a link to the supplier???
Here is the one I believe I have: http://shop.odysseybattery.com/p/pc680mjt-p?pp=12
I didn't pay that much for it, though. There listing of automotive batteries shows larger units, but these powersports batteries are more than adequate. One nice thing is that the battery can be mounted in any orientation other than completely inverted. Makes it easy to find a spot for it.
Thank you Lane..

For the extra few bucks, a good, easy way to drop 40 or so lbs. And any time you can lose that much weight (2?%) out of one of these cars, that's huge. Easier on brakes (and they're more effective), better power to weight ratio so faster acceleration for what you've got and better mileage; I'm sure there's more...Al
My car uses a U-1 size battery. Yes, a utility battery that usually powers lawn tractors. VW aircooled are just bigger lawnmowers anyway, right? 16.5 pounds and available everywhere. Tractor supply or ANY auto store. 400 CCA, 8" X 8" X 6" and yes it is a wet cell, but cheap and available trump everything else when you are broken down on the side of the road. Same reason I use the Autozone universal rotary fuel pump.
Good idea, Danny. I used an "outdoor power equipment" battery in my son's Miata. It's cheap and good.
I'm reading up On the Oddessy battery It has brass post and is really beefy. and is vibration resistant.
