John; use the search utility here and post spare tire; you'll get a lot of info that way. Off the top of my head a good size is a T-125-70D15 (temporary tire as found on American cars) mounted on a 4-1/2" wide VW rim. You can get these tires in junkyards; mine came off of a recent Chrysler Stratus.
I'm not really sure, I think John H. could tell you what fits. I just don't want one in my front trunk. I like to keep cleaning supplies and some basic tools in the very front and the rest could be used for my garment bag. The rear trunk is in no way big enough for a spare tire, it wouldn't fit a standard size carry on bag.

I have no intention of changing a tire anyway, so I prefer to carry one little can of fix a flat as apposed to a jack and spare tire.
The Specialty Autoworks cars come with a compact spare that fits nicely and leaves room for a few odds and ends. I have a hydraulic 1 ton jack in the nose well, a tool roll next to the tire and there is still space left over for soft items like plastic garmet bags. I made good use of the space, front, back and behind the seats for my trips to CA and PA last spring.
