Engine specs?
You need to know what the head was designed for - long reach or short reach? 14 or 12mm? I don't like the platinum plugs for VWs. NGK or Bosch are good brands. Champion or Autolite are second bests.
Motor is 90.3 X 74. the heads take a regular half inch reach plugs.
Cam? compression? You probably need a step or 2 colder (than a stock plug) depending on the details. What came out of it?
Bought the car after it was left outside, for 10 years, with a tree on it. I took the motor
apart, had it bored for the 90mm cylinders, had a competition valve job,
and all new bearings and what ever else that needed work. The previous
owner installed a 74mm counterweighted crank and a cam. he couldn't
remember the grind. It seems to have a lot of low end power, so I'm assuming
that it's not to hot. It still pulls hard above 4000 rpm's. I haven't pushed it
further because the motor is still new. I can't remember what plugs came
out. When I got the car, the motor was such a mess, as I was taking things apart,
and throwing them away. I'm using a platinum plug in my 356, and they are
great. I don't have the plug # here, but I'll check it when I get back to my shop.
I was going to try the same plug in my new motor considering, the compression
is about the same. What do you think?
Also, what plug wires do you recommend?
try ngk bp6hs they are the extended tip, will burn hotter at lower temps, and because they are copper they will get rid of the heat faster, its the best of both worlds. for the wires buy vw that are solid core, no resistors, throw all the ignition you can at it. bill
I use Taylor 8mm wires
Thanks, are they copper core, and who sells them?
Was wondering, this motor came with 44 IDF's. Good choice?

I was told to use the copper core plugs. But I had a deal of a time finding them. I finally found some at Acme VW parts close to home here in Harrisburg.

I've been using Bosch W8AP platinum plugs since day one on my Speedster engine. Also ran them for 20 years on snowmobile engines, too - Never had one fail.
Absolutely love them. Even though I run a tad rich, they love it and never give me problems, PLUS they should easily last 100,000 miles. Looked at them last Spring and the cone colors were dark brown ( good combustion and slightly rich). They are plated and do not need anti-seize on them when installed.
Plug wires: Taylor 8mm spiral. Do not run a resistor rotor with them (they don't need it).
44 Webers are fine for that engine.
I went with the Taylor 8mm spiral. The guy from Jegs informed me that
you can't use solid core with the electronic ignition. I'm glad I didn't figure
that the hard way, the way I usually do.
Happy New Years.
Gordon I completely agree on the plugs. On my 356, I have one cyl. that used
to foul a plug every 500 miles. I switched to the W8AP's and it's never happened
again.
Yeah, they give a pretty intense spark. I started using them in the 1960's on snowmobiles, some of which were notorious for "loading up" when cold (under 10F), caused by gas condensing inside of the intake manifold and then making things really rich and fouling the plugs. Everybody switched to Platinums and the problem disappeared. Later, we learned how to more effectively pre-heat the intakes the way everyone does it today (and similar to how VW did it on their engines, too!)
