Michael,, Hot rod, and truck shops have a stereo brand "Custom Autosound" That has a line of "Secretaudio" The receiver can be put remote in the front trunk, and a 1 1/2" x 4" display can be invisibally mounted under the dash ( swivels out when you need to see it.) The thing is operated by a remote control. So nothin in the dash or anything visible. It also has an additional CD changer that can be also remotely mounted in the trunk.

Speakers it has 8" x 11" speaker bokes that mount either on the wall of the back seat....or flat on the package tray.

radio complete $200.00
with CD changer $450.00
speakers ( a pair) $125 a set
check out their website www.secretaudio.com

I just ordered this for my speedster.

I have form my last IM, a custom built sub box that is only about 7-8" tall (so it clears the top when the roof is down) and i wrapped in leather on the front and speaker cloth on the top and looks like an OE back seat. When the boot is on, walker by's dont see a thing. The leather is the same color as the seats and the cloth is the same color as the carpet. Plus the letaher has the 4 lines stiched into the front tho resemble the back seat. Now its black leather, grey cloth. It houses 2 8" Rockford Fosgate Punch subs in a ported box. Very deep bass for such a small car. I can show pics when I find the camera card. Asking $150 USD or trades. It was used in the back of a 95 Roadster, so Im not sure if the radius corners will fit CMC or Vintage.
Digging up another older post trying to find out about the electrical limitations.

Anyone getting background engine noise on their radio. I have a new panasonic radio/deck and component Alpines for the doors but wonder if the VW motor is going to interfere with the sound system.

Thanks for any help.....
I'm with Gary Clarke. I'm putting a Secret Audio system in my flared VS and am going the iPod route instead of using a CD player. I'm mounting the head unit in the trunk over the battery on a cover made of 1/4" plywood that I'm going to cover with carpet. I'm using marine speakers so I don't have to worry about rain and am mounting them in the front kick panels under the dash and behind the drivers seat. I made speaker enclosures similar to the ones Joe Soltis did in his CMC. In the Vintage there is a flat steel frame brace that makes it a little tight, but I was able to work around them. Far from a perfect system, but I suspect most of the time I'm listening to it will be while the car is sitting still at shows are while I'm taking a leisurely cruise around town. I hope to spend more time listening to engine music. Have to finish the build first, though!

Jim,

You shouldn't have any problem with that if you use high quality spark plug wires, shielded and radio suppressed. The ignition on the VW engine is WAY simple, even if you've gone over to electronic/Pretronic?etc. there's nothing going on here.

No problems at all.
Luck,

TC
George,

Sorry, I've been AWOL for a couple of days. I'm using the SecretAudio head unit. It isn't set up to take a line from the iPod. I'm using a Transpod FM transmitter. It plugs into a standard 12v power plug (cigarrette lighter). If you are an audiophile, it probably wouldn't be what you want, but it works for me. It's like listening to the strongest radio signal on the dial, but it's not perfect CD quality. The upside is that I can use it in whatever vehicle I'm in.
