Special Edition Speedster - Mini Powered

On another thread, Cory mentioned that he's considering a Special Edition Mini powered Speedster. Is this true? My youngest daughter is interning in San Jose, CA for the summer and left me her Mini for safe keeping. ;) Even though it's not an "S" model, I've had a blast driving it - it's almost like it's on rails. (Since Oklahoma has had record rains, my Speedy hasn't had very much exercise lately so I had to do something for fun.)

In any event, am I nuts to think that a Mini powered Speedster would be even more fun - and there just might be some technological advances that would take stress out of my life, encourage my wife to take a long haul in the little car, and even make my SEG bigger? This could be it folks.....

Is it true, is it really, really true? These two can be merged?

Yes it is true. I have some pictures but not permission to share. :-(

I am hoping to visit Indiana and drive one as soon as they are ready. Carey is very close. They have built test cars and are testing in Brazil. I think he said available late 2007 or early 2008. Hopefully Carey wil chime in with some update. Lane also usually has the latest scoop.

My suggestion is call Carey Hines and get the latest direct from him.

Cal, Special Edition/Chamonix has a relationship with the manufacturer of the engines used in the MINI starting in 2002, or whenever the new generation came out, and continuing until the recent update. Since BMW is now making their own engine, the manufacturer (Whose name I forgot) is happy to supply new drivetrains to Chamonix. This will include the 5 and 6 speed manual transaxles, as well as the CVT automatic, mounted behind the passenger compartment in a mid-engined configuration. The Supercharger is not available, as BMW still has rights to that, but they are working on a turbo application. The pictures that Tom alluded to are impressive. As he said, call Carey.

Wow... I just read the Mini Speedster thread over on SpeedsterShop and saw the photos. I think I've found my car. I love what SAW has on offer too but things seem to be at a crawl there, and its hard to beat a 0 mile drive train from the manuf.

I can't wait to hear road reports from the stateside shakeout.

From the beginning, Lifan was supposed to take over, so we are still hoping that this happens. Lifan, although an Asian company, has some Brazilian partnership, and they are already speaking with Daimler. Not sure of all the fine details but we are still hopeful for that to happen.
We have been approached by several other companies, so the final details are still up in the air. Fortunately, the initial design idea was to be able to offer several cradles for various engine choices, so we may revert back to that approach and take it from there... it's always something. :)
