I'm stopping short of advertising for these guys -- www.nhspeedometer.com/ -- but North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock did a really good job for me on a broken 928 speedo once upon a time.
To recalibrate it, they wanted a set of metrics from me involving a revolution of the driving tire(s) over a measured distance, the engine specifications and a couple smaller details. I got the VDO speedo back about three weeks after I sent it to them.
Their services aren't free, but the work is spot-on.
I believe North Hollywood Speedometer in California can re-calibrate. I don't know how expensive it is or what info they need when you send the Guage to them.
Do a search here for more threads on this subject. It's been covered several times.
Mine is off too. I't just in the Dash filling the hole.
I installed a bicycle speedo (magnetic pick-up on the frt. wheel). The bicycle speedo is user calibrated and changeable. So it's very accurate, Plus it has elapsed time, fastest Speed, Regular odo and Trip odo, timer, and Clock and it can cycle through all of these automatically or manually.
Sigma is the brand name. It's the only one that I know of that will work past 65 MPH.

They make wireless models, but I wasn't sure it would work in this application, so I stuck to the HardWire sure connection.
One problem with these is they aren't illuminated. If they'd make one that you can see at night, it would be perfect. I use a small led pointed at it for lighting, which works OK, but it would be better if it were backlit. Slight glare/reflection on windshield is the result.
For less that $30.00 it's a great accessory.
