If you are talking about the resetable trip odo.... The odo on these speedometers is pretty weak. The gears are plastic and, the theory is, that if you zero the odo while moving you will strip out the gears.

It is really only a big deal if you can't add or subtract the big numbers.
My oversight Corey, if the speedometer is working then the cable is protruding from the dust cap on the left front wheel. The cable goes from the speedo and then thru the center of the left front wheel axle. The cable then passes thru the grease/dust cap that protects the hub bearings. When the wheel revolves the square end of the cable keeps the cable rotating with the wheel. The rotation makes the speedo and the odo work.

Sounds like you have a broken speedo.
If that's his major worry - it will be available soon again for sale. Most are tinkerer's cars - in fine old sports car tradition (abeit not as bad as British ones). You have CMC custom built (by Johnson Controls) VINTAGE gauges? If so they are a unique larger size. Place ad here to see if someone has old replacement one. I sold my entire set with senders and instructions for under $100. Guts of yours could be changed out but more trouble and more costly than replacement. Most were chrome with white face - but there were brass bezel and chrome with black. These were sold back in '90 for $325/set and were on the MG TD and MB Gazellel too. MGMagic in Hollywood FL may still have new ones (as well as other CMC NOS).

If they are VDO (probably not since most of them have trip odo) then replace for $100 new.

I'd try tapping back of odo - might just be spider web or snag and tap would register a few more miles.
