Nope, Herb. There's no computer. These cars aren't as advanced as all that (yet).

There is a single wire from the side of the distributor to the Tach (it's the same connection point as the coil, so your tach might be connected at the coil, rather than at the distributor). That connection goes directly to the tach. There might be two other wire connections on your tach: One is for ground and will be either green or brown, and the distributor (signal) connection will be the third - sorry, I can't guess at the wire color, but it may go to the "+" connector on the tach- I'll check a couple of wiring diagrams and get back to you on that.

OK, so now that you know what the wiring might look like, you probably need to remove and replace the connectors several times on EACH END of each wire to clean the connections, get rid of any corrosion that has taken place and re-establish a proper electrical connection. That's probably all that has gone wrong and cleaning those connections should restore your tach to proper operation. They corrode because you live somewhat close to salty air and they simply corrode over time - the price you and I bear for living in paradise, I guess, right?

Awww.......SHOOT!

If it's the Speedo, you'll probably need a new drive cable.

It's a mechanical drive - nothing electronic involved.

You could potentially check the cable by removing the speedo end, driving around a little and see if the cable within the speedo "cable" sheath is actually turning. If so, try gently holding it with your fingers to provide resistance and see if it continues to turn. If so, then you have a mal-functioning speedo unit which will need repair.

If the cable innerds stop turning when you gently grasp them with your fingers (while the car is in motion), then the "cable" is bad and needs replacement.

I know, I know.....it's hard to drive and chec the speedo cable at the same time - get someone else to drive while you check the cable out.

But then, from what we've seen of John Steele's work on here, the speedo cable might have been too loosely screwed onto the speedo unit and simply loosened and fell off. Or you can pull your left front hub cap to make sure that the tiny square end of the cable is protruding through the wheel's center dust cap and has the cotter pin holding it on. THAT is the drive point that makes the speedo work (i.e: the other end of the cable).
well it was time to replace the cable for the speedo [$ 40.-] but then we checked my breakes.......left disc bad bad bad [so we have to change both ....caliper left bad bad bad so we have to change] after 20.000 miles ? maybe it is normal, anyway will be ready today, just had my birthday last sunday so wife says ,,happy birthday,, now you have new breaks ! fits my philosophy ,,WENN YOU GET OLD,CHECK YOUR BREAKES BECAUSE ITS GOING DOWNHILL VERY FAST,,hope tomorrow is a better day, greetings to all, herbert hofer.
