I am down to the wire to finally get my Outlaw Speedster painted. The only problem is which color? The typical silver comes to mind though I am thinking of something a bit different. Whats the vote on Sunset metallic orange with two pearl silver racing stripes. The wife hates the idea and says it will affect the resale value. I'm not looking to sell it......I 'm gonna DRIVE IT!!!!!!! Time is runing out and I have to decide by 4:00 today. What do you fellow Speedster owners think?

Go with the wife, although you think now you will never sell it, reality is that somewhere down the road something else will trip your treigger and you'll want to sell to obtain the latest whim. Been there, done that. Most people looking at a used car will always ask what color it is before asking about mechanical details.

But as you say, it is your car..... Let us know what you decided on!

Bruce
Just dropped the car off at the paintshop. The shop owner specializes in Corvettes . I told the owner I was partially interested in a bright silver. He sort of gave me a slight disgusting look. I did say I was more in favoring the sunset orange. Boy did he change his expression . He loves that color. He brought up a good point regarding color selection. On a custom car you obviously want it to be noticed. Silver would just give it the plain look I guest. I am not knocking fellow Speedster owners choice of color. If you look at cars today two out of five cars are either white or a shade of silver. In one mile my kids counted 95 silver vehicles. Silver is the most popular color this year. I am partial to the Sunset Orange because it different . I do remember my fondness of an burn orange 1967 GTO when I was 7 years old. That car was awesome back then(1971). The wife can agree with the the sunset orange though not with the silver stripes. She said it would look like a race car. Duhhhh!!!!! It practically is . One thing I did notice is that most women dislike oranges. A plus for my wife ... it won't be a chick magnet.
Though all the work I did on the body to repair stress cracks the body is very wavey. I am sure glad it is out of my garage and at the body shop. No more filler dust or fiberglass itch. Now, I can start putting the chassis together.

Joe
Joe,

Glad you went for a color and not silver. I was planning on silver and then sort of at the last minute changed my mind and went with the blue. I'm really glad I did because the blue and red interior is going to look really cool. And as you noticed, everyone has a silver car. Not many blue cars with red interior on the road, and even fewer orange cars! You will definately stand out!

So how long for the paint process? You might leapfrog me in my progress. It took me almost 4 months to do my paint, but that was me doing it all. I learned a lot which I will write up once I get done.
Joe:

Print this post and file it somewhere. If you ever begin to regret your decision not to go with silver, drag this post out and re-read it.

All of the paint people I have talked to get a pained look when you mention painting a car silver. They all agree silver has no tolerance for Ultra Violet Rays. It deteriorates rapidly and is heavily oxidized within a couple of years. And if you clear-coat it the clear-coat is soon effected by the oxidation of the undercoat.

A second point, a biology professor once described to me (This will not make women's liberation and equal rights folks happy) We humans produce a chemical in our eyes that allows us to see better at night. With age our ability to produce this chemical wanes. On average, women
I'm happy you got what you wanted, but it (obviously) isn't what I would have picked. Thats why they make more than one color you can paint a car.

I've had two speedsters- both silver. As the official standard bearer for the constipated classic speedster owner, I'll stand in the breach... alone apparently... in defense of silver as the quintecential (sp?) 356 color. Deviate from the plan with your wide-bodies, outlaws, and such, but the color of racing machines from the Fatherland in the '50s was... you betcha'... SILVER. Deviation from the plan was not tolerated then, and it is just too darned cool now to mess with (for me).

Yeah, James Dean died in one. Yeah, they are a target. Oxidation? Well I guess, but you know- I've got 3K mi in 2 years, and I park inside. It's gonna be a while before I have to worry about that. Scratches from the cat sleeping on it- that's another matter.

But as far as being a dime a dozen?!?... You guys obviously don't live where I do. I don't WANT to be more conspicious. This car is a rolling novelty wherever it goes, the LAST thing I want is more attention. I feel like I'm wearing a plaid jacket already.

If I had it to do again- I might get a "wild hair" and do something really crazy... like get red upholstery instead of black. But only to please my buds on the forum...
Stan,

Gee, I didn't realize you were so sensitive. Guess what, we have a silver Ford Windstar but the only reason we got that is because the wife liked it. That is the primo reason, that and it somewhat reflects sun rays up here in the summer where that is of prime concern. Almost every car around here is white, Boring!

I used to have wild hair but quit using it as a statement because it fell out about 30 years ago, now if I could only find it and glue it on!

I know Silver is the historic German racing color but wasn't white also their racing color also, maybe in the 30's? Seems like I remember seeing some white Benz's roaring around from old pictures.

If you think you are conspiciuas, (SP) in your tub, you ought to come up here to the land of 4WD pickups, I had it out this morning on some back roads and the farm kids were jumping up and down and pointing. At least they weren't throwing stones! This definatly would be the wrong car to drive if you were having an illict affair. You'd be drawn and quartered in about 2 days. Maybe that is why the wife just smiles when I pull out of the garage. Rambling on here but silver is OK, just not my favorite, and by the way I wanted mine in the Meissen Blue but the wife said RED and I know you hate red Stan. I always tell everybody she picked the color!

Bruce
My post was meant to be a joke, but after re-reading it, and thinking about what I said concerning the red IM in the classified section, I can see how you would think I was serious. I wasn't. I couldn't care less what color you or anybody else paints their car. I like silver. A lot. If somebody likes black, or red, or orange, or lime green- I can see the coolness in that, too. I'm sorry it didn't come across like that.
Hey Joe,
I'm glad you went with your heart instead of your head (or your wife's head).
Your car is a replica...not the real thing. I have always wanted a Speedster, but I always imagined customizing it the way I would want it. I certainly didn't want it 'stock'. Even if I had the real thing I still wouldn't want it stock. As Sly said, "Different strokes for different folks". Dare to be different. Anybody can do silver but only you can do metallic orange. And only I can do liquid copper.

Ahhhh! Now I understand why the wife can never find our silver Suby!
Good decision dude! There are some real 'statement' colors out there; some understated to a point where they are just too cool, and then there are the colors not for the shrinking violets in the automotive world. It sounds as if you homed in on what is a true compliment to your state of mind and the car's features!
Wives, I'm beginning to think they should not be allowed to vote...on matters automotive that is, sorry... yes dear, I'm almost finished, be right there...Oh man, I gots to go...
Good luck
It's sunset orange. The same color this will be on the 2005 Vette. It has a lot of silver flake it it. In the shadows the curves really give it some character. In the sunlight it is unreal. Didn't anyone see the side intake ducts. They will be fully functional for the RAT motor. I have already started to diesect the BAS exhaust to make everthing fit. Custom 17" wheels were order today. The brake plumbing is about done.
The ducts were found from a very long search on the net. They are from Aeogear out of California. There are 3-4 different styles. Placement is based on personal preferance. Once you figure out were they are going , cut the opening a bit smaller with a zip saw. You will also need to trim the duct . File fit the remaining area. Use a fiberglass bondo / filler as an adhesive and rivet the duct flange on the outside. You will grind off the outside flange later. Then glass the back side with cloth and resin. Fill the voids with a good marine filler material like Adtech filler. The rest is lost of sanding for paint. I did make a n internal flange for the inner portion for placement of a NACA duct . I'll post some pictures later.
Joe
