Do any of you know where a good quality "form fitted" cover can be found? I really do not want a cover that's baggy or will hit the ground. Also any suggestions for thresholds? the self adhesive "grit paper" I got with my VS kit is not going to make it!
Any help will be greatly apreciated.

Performance Products has four different choices. Custom for a speedster with one side mirror. I am waiting for one now. I will let you know the results. I bought the mid priced Stormtech one for exterior use. It was discounted at the checkout to under 175 with shipping.

In regard to the threshold trim, I ordered original style(repro) pieces from Tweeks. There are 4 pieces per side, the stainless carpet trim molding, the lower rubber door seal (had to be trimmed on width), the ribbed rubber mat (cut to length and radius corners), and the lower stainless trim sill. There was originally a formed steel reinforcement that is located inside the lower door seal, but that would not work with my car. I think all together the cost was around $125 or so. Looks exactly like an original!
Larry,

Go to this...... www.calcarcover.com/default.asp?flash=1
Click on car and truck covers, follow the prompts asking manufactuer, year, model. It takes you to the appropriate year of 356. When you call specify that it's a Speedster, they have a pattern for it, and let them know if you have both mirrors. Yes, they do monograming, custom letters, logos, etc. The price runs between $100 and $370 depending on what you get. I have a very nice one in their mid range. I think John H and I probably chose the same one as the price is about the same... around $180 with lettering and bag.

I believe there's plenty of room for a flare. I'll put it on tomorrow and judge it for you.

Called Cal car covers today and they did ask if I had one or two mirrors. However they said that the patterns they have are for mirror in the stock location only. My two mirrors are down further from the stock location (similar to many other cars on this site) They did say they can do one with no mirrors. My question to Jim and John is do you think one without mirror "pockets" would would still fit ok? I realize that the cover would just hump up where the mirrors are but more so wanted to make sure it would not cause any major problems on the side. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts,

Larry

PS Jim, I hope things are going well for you.
I own one with the two mirrors. Yes, their mirror slots are in the wrong place. The cover works great (even though it looks a little funny, I'd go with the one without mirrors), comes with a wire and lock kit. I've parked my car in airports for days... come back to a clean and well protected car. My old top use to fly away when it got too windy. This one stays in place even on the most windy days.

Larry,

Look under files/members/Dub-U-Tub 2001 Vintage or click the registry link beside this post. Under my folder look at files labeled: Pic 1 through Pic 4.

Pic 1: You can see the mirrors are cut at the windshield location, but as David said, just order sans mirrors. Even better? I would talk to the folks at Cal Cover Co. and get them to put the mirror pockets down the fender per your measurements. If you measure the distance from the top of your headlight ring to the mirror I could measure that location for you on my cover and that way you could get it custom done. See, if they offer it sans mirrors, then all they are doing is sewing in these mirror "cups" in... might as well have them put where you want them!

Pics 2-4. Sorry they are cut off some. I took them in the shop and there isn't much room to get a clear shot. I may roll it out in the daylight to get an overall shot. But, the main thing is there appears to be plenty of room for flares... and it sure has room for my luggage rack. Like Stan, I have the security strap that runs underneath from side to side, a nice option for roadies.

You can get lettering, as you can see. Also, I ordered a mid level grade cover.... in that it is really soft and non-abrasive inside, but the outside is made for road trips, etc, instead of full time outside storage. The cover works great in all weather and temps... it's just not made for long term abuse.

Hope this helps!!!!! Also a shot of the car today as I washed it under spd23. Never too cold to wash my baby!

Thanks for the pics Jim,
My car is now at the paint shop (finally) so I will go there tomorrow and measure where the mirrors will mount and then call Cal car cover and suggest your idea. If they won't or can't do it then I will just order it without.

Thanks again Jim, you guys and this site are great!

Jim and Larry,

My replica was one of three cars custom built by a ship builder (they use fiberglass too) in the 80's. The body was actually plugged from a real Speedster. The door sill detail on a VS I recently inspected looked very similar to mine. I made a few full size paper templates of the sill before cutting the mat and I did need to trim the outside lower trim strip a bit on both ends, but things worked out very well. As I mentioned before, there is a steel channel reinforcement meant to be placed inside the rubber seal, but my sill was too shallow to allow it to fit and I ended up removing about 1/2 inch or so of the lower part of the door seal that lays over the mat. I don't have a digital camera yet (word is one may be here Christmas), but I will try and post details when I can.
