I have recently sourced some cast headlight grilles the vertical bar type, after seeing some bugs in the United Kingdom sporting them and retaining the original glass, rather than the grille replacing the glass. I have also seen some pictures of a new Vintage Speedster sporting these grilles and retaining the lenses. I have contacted Kirk at VS and he has confirmed it can be done by removing 2 of the retaining spring clips and pushing the glass back, and the grill sticks out at the bottom. I have searched the forum, but still can't get my head round it, can any of you guys help? I think the show bugs I have seen with them they appear to have ground the lugs and the lip off and stuck the grilles to the lenses? retaining the knurled bolt/hardware?

they are not meant to be used with the glass. i have them and i tried to use the glass, but you really have to force it. I did manage to get them on with the glass, but they never really seemed *on* there. i opted to run just the grills.

i waxed the crap out of the assemblies first. those are pretty thin and can rust up on you like that.

on the plus side - it makes changing the running lights a cinch.
I've had vertical grilles over glass for 9 years and no issues. That statement requires two qualifiers: 1) bugs are damn hard to remove. and 2) I've never had to remove one of them yet. So I may change my mind when that event happens.

Concerning installation, John Steele at JPS has famously said, " It's easy to do - if you know how"!

Thanks, my problem is, unlike California the weather here in the United Kingdom can be some what unpredictable and although I agree that if I could run them without the lenses I probably would I don't think its viable (mango smoothie). The plexi glass option may be a consideration, I think it's the fact I have seen cars both bugs and speedster even factory built vintage speedsters sporting grilles and lenses. If anyone knows the JPS secret of 'it's easy if you know how' please let me know. help!
Matt
I tried every which way to mount my grills. I thought the buckets would rust out if they were exposed to the elements for too long. I bondo and glassed the bottom, did a complete paint job then cleared coated the whole unit. With the H4 conversion, the running light can be mounted inside the headlight unit. This took time and $$$ but ended up looking and working out properly.

Oooopppsss . . . forgot all about 'em.

Cory, if you want these for your ride, lemme know and I'll send 'em right off to you. I made them last year, but really don't have a car that's right for them. Maybe yours is ?
