Happy day! Just purchased a 2004 Vintage Speedster with 1600cc dual carb engine. Been in love with the Speedster since I was a kid and finally it's happening! Living a few hours from Specialty Auto and loving the tubular construction and liquid cooled Subaru that was the way I was wanting to head forever but, like my accountant says "I've got champagne on a beer budget!" Anyways, with that being said does anyone know of a good VW mechanic close to the Woodstock area AND any suggestions on oil? The engine currently has 4200 miles on the engine. Thanks for any suggestions!!

Congrats on the new Speedster---sounds like you scored a winner! You need to contact Leon Chupp who lives in Gainesville, GA. He is active on this site and is really an expert himself---and a great guy! He will steer you in the right direction.
We used to have names and addresses by location on this site and maybe it's still here somewhere and a town the size of Atlanta surely is represented.
If nothing else contact Jake Raby in Cleveland, GA (Raby Enterprises 47 Raby Drive, Cleveland, GA) and he will point you in the right direction. Tell him that Jack Crosby recommended you call him. He is the best and can help you.
Look at all the "Newbies" posts on this site and see what questions have been answered and you will have a good start on enjoying this wonderful hobby.
Having a Speedster is great but the best part of ownership is the events held around the country for gatherings of Speedster owners. Look at the "Smokies" thread under "Events" and plan to make that trip!!!
Get smart on oil right away because that matters hugely with these engines. Same as using Stabil to counter the bad effects of Ethanol it you can't get ethanol-free. Many of us use Brad Penn Oil---(Must be the green variety) 20W50 in Summer and 10E40 in Winter.
Welcome to the madness!!!
Jack,
Thank you so much for the information. I will be sure to Leon and/or Jake. So, the Stabil info is a first for me. From what I have heard almost all gas at gas stations has she type of ethanol in it now and days so, I guess I should play it safe and jump on the Stabil. Also, with the Brad Penn Oil do you suggest an oil change to convert and then dumping after 1K miles and running another load of Brad P oil again just to get it truly changed throughout? Sorry for all the questions but my mind is like a sponge right now. I'm like 25 threads deep on the site right now! lol
I should have proof read! lol
Those are good questions for Leon or Jake. I know when I change my oil not all of it drains out but surely most of it does. Personally I'd just drain and refill. I carry a couple of spare qts of oil with me and also a bottle of the "STP 4 cylinder oil treatment in case I ever run out of Brad Penn and have to use oil without the zinc and other things our engines require.
I use the marine formula of StaBil --it's concentrated so I can use less---I put one oz per 8 gallons of gas. We have a station that sells ethanol free gas but on the road it's all contaminated with ethanol.
Spend some time searching on this site---we have some very smart folks here who have already answered many questions that you have.
Get the John Muir book asap "How to keep your VW alive" --it is loaded with information that pertains to the engines and everything but the body of these cars.
Good luck!
Hi Guy...... I just tumbled into this post... I can't truthfully reccomend an oil type / weight for the Subby engine.( no experience ).... I have an older fellow with abilities who works on the things I can't persue on my car... He has a garage on Hwy 60, near the Gainesville airport..... I live about one and a half miles from there.... I handle my own wrench bending for the most part..... Jack has a Raby engine in his car so he knows Jake well.... Jake normally doesn't work on cars except to install his own engines.... He will give you sound advice and help locate help if required....
I have no knowledge of a VW air cooled shop around Woodstock, but a Q&A session at several tire retailers will normally find one.... Or try some body shops....
Sorry I'm not of more assistance... If I can help personaly, post a tel.number....
Hiya Leon--he doesn't have a Subaru engine---a Type I with dual carbs is what he has.
Hope you are well!
The Subaru engine would be killer but Jack is right. I've got a 1600cc dual carb setup. Thanks again for the help. I will start by asking my paint/body shop guy if he knows anyone close that he might recommend. I love Gainesville and Lake Lanier but, that is a bit of a haul for a tune up! I have learned being a small business owner, a reliable mechanic makes a massive difference! My mechanical knowledge is not vast by any means. I used to own an older A8 and did the basics as far as oil changes, brake jobs, etc but that is about as in depth as I get. Hoping to really starting getting involved more now that the Speedster is happening.
Can't wait to take delivery next Saturday! Any suggestions as to a "once over" inspection when I take delivery?
Thanks you guys!

Damned right---bring that bad boy to the Smoky Mountain event in Sept and we'll give her a lookin' over! Check it out in the "Events" section. These are great things to attend plus it will be cooler in the mountains.
If I can do it from Hot Springs, AR, you can do it from just down the road a piece!
What Jack said, join us in the mountains. I'm driving down from Detroit.
X3 on the Smokies trip. You need to find out what you're getting yourself into.
Twist my arm! Sounds like good times!
Contact me at lmchupp AT charter.net.... Insert @ for AT.
Leon will tell you the things to check when you take delivery. He build that golden beauty you see over his name by himself and even won a trophy for it at the great Carlisle event
back in mid-May.
