I just saw this on yesterday's results from the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction.

That car was built by Greg Leach, but sold by it's current owner.
I watched it last night. I was very surprised it went that high.
Buyer must have thought it was the real thing. Nothing out of ordinary on the spec sheet. Not even an outstanding engine. He could almost buy a Speedster and a Coupe for that price!
I am surprised that Porsche allowed Barratt-Jackson to use 'Porsche' to describe the car.
Couldn't the buyer have purchased the car directly from Vintage for much less?
And, there has to be at least 2 people who didn't bother to check out the prices.
Some rich guy's wife said "I love the little cute car, buy it for me honey!"
"The suspension has been tuned to provide a driving experience true to the original speedsters."
Wow! Talk about paying too much...
holy crap!
and those are not 44's. those are 34's
**calling a car transport now to Scottsdale.
-there were two bidders in that room!
When it got to 35K I thought " they're paying pretty good money for a basic speedster".
I must have missed something . Nice car but...
P.T. Barnum was right! Geez!

Hammer went down at $66K the $72K is with the BJ fees.

I am confused. The pictures are not correct? How can a picture not be correct? I am not asking that with an aggressive tone. I am truly curious.
When I first saw the sales price and the photos, I thought, "How much did they pay for that Porsche horn button?", and in the photos you posted, there is no Porsche horn button. Guess the seller has good marketing sense.
I think WNGD has it right: The "rich guy" is 65, his wife is 22. SHE's got the 44's and he's gonna be working on a heart attack later that night!

Damn, Greg! Looks like you're not charging enough for your cars.
The car was being built when the customer entered it in the Auction , he has purchased multiple cars from me and multiple in the past from kirk . Barrett Jackson needed a Photo of the car to list it on the website when he signed up for the auction. We finished the car last Thursday , this is why the car in the photo is a little different.
Greg
there are two of them. Tent 5 C-28 and Tent 5 C-16

both white, 1914cc, and both look like VS's
"Billet-type pedals"? I see "VW-type pedals". That buyer deserves about $30k back for false advertising!
There is a provision in auctions to bail out if there is any fraud or misrepresentation. BJ is obviously a legit company. I think you will see this unwound. Or as others have suggested this guy may have had the night of a lifetime. It would have been a lot cheaper to just drive up to NV and order what he wanted at a Brothel.
I'm sensing a lot of jealousy here guys (lol) The previous owner just put an extra $35000.00 his pocket and the new owner has a 22 yr old wife with 44's.
Totally agree with Jesse.
Gotta admire the ballsiness of the seller.
And the cluelessness of the buyer......

I'm very happy for the seller ( $$$ easy money ) and happy for the buyer too. Come to think of it, good for the builder too as long as he will support the product properly. Some people need this stuff. I've watched some of these auctions and the look on a successful buyers face and the admiration of his close friends ( or others ) makes him just feel good when he wins. Like I said...some people need this and can afford to get into the limelight when they feel like it. He'll celebrate tonight, buy his friends a big dinner, give a very generous tip to the server, they go home happy and maybe buy something nice tomorrow, the sales person gets a commission and stays off the street for one more week ....etc. ad nauseum....it's all good.
At least it has a "rebuilt and brand new" engine and transaxle.
My slightly used VS is now for sale for $55,000 with patina, effective this morning.

That is a stunning car Greg. Great job.

That was my first thought, and it may be true about the 2nd bidder, but I just watched that episode and the winning bidder was there with his friend, no wife or honey. Congratulations to Greg, and a huge congratulations to the person who had the guts to order the car on speculation. I would have thought the premium for immediate pickup to be a couple thousand. The person who ordered this car from Vintage tiene Huevos Grande.

Don't you kinda wish you knew who the 2nd bidder was?
Auctions are hype producing and completely illogical in their conclusion for price/value equations.
Wow! Just Wow! These cars are such a great investment. It's no wonder the owner at Beverly Hills Motors has been buying these up. Who would have ever thought?
You know if anyone wants my IM for $70,000 I'll sell it!!! We can skip all that auction crap and fees and get right down to an all cash transaction. I might even be able to arrange financing!

The second one goes on the block Sunday lot 1537. Curious to see how much this one goes for to see if the first one was a one-off sale.
Some folks have deeper pockets than good sense.
Buyer had more dollars than sense.
Lots of resto mods and trucks have sold for pretty good money. On the high end in my opinion, but still far less than they cost to build. Many iconic cars from the 50s and 60s with all modern running gear. Pretty cool but not cheap.

Just saw a completely restored original '67 Z/28 that sold for the same as the Speedster replica. The restomod Camaros are selling for more than that original Z/28. Restmod Corvettes are selling for more than originals. Almost like everything has turned upside down.
Really? Weird. On BaT things are as they were, with 'Vette nit-pickers picking every nit on anything offered as "matching numbers."
I would have thought a first-year all-original Z-28 would bring all the money at any auction...
