I've always found 1st and 2nd on a stock beetle tranny to be too short. I'm hoping the 3.44 I'm installing gives 1st and 2nd a bit more room.

Ron, I have stock 1 through 4 with 3.44 final. First is now more useful but still short as is second. Redline(6500) gets you a couple miles an hour over sixty. Third is good to 95, so a good gear to leave it in. At 55 mph, I am at about 2500 rpm, and it will stay cool at that speed and pull fine, but I will downshift to third up steep hills. When on the interstate, running 75-80 you are between 3000 to 3500 in fourth. I have gotten 32 mpg at an average speed of 78, so pretty efficient right there.

A five speed would be a very sweet option, but for a four speed I am pretty happy.
