Brad, if you are at all mechanical and have a place to work on your car, you will find it very satisfying and not that difficult to do your own service. With the help of the John Muir book, "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" which is available via this website, many a shade tree mechanic has been created.

I know a little bit about spinning a wrench, not wizard mind you, but found this publication to be invaluable keeping my 2000 VS alive and well. Not only that, but the book is an entertaining read. Better still, there are plenty of folks on this site who will be glad to help you if you have questions.

Just a thought.

ps. BTW, the car was purchased in Glen Ellyn and I drove it home to Oak Park, but that's another chapter in my life.

Thanks for the info on the book,I just bought one off ebay for $12.80 total.I was going to have a shop do my valves,I rebuilt 356 engines for a couple of months while in Germany back in the early 70's,the problem is I forgot most of everything...hopefully this book will bring back my memory.......and the thing is.....if you do it,you'll have no question that it was done right.
Hey guys I'd thought I would jump in... I have had VW's all my life always did my own tune-ups! You will dig-it, it makes you feel so good and you will dig the connection with you and your speedster! Sorry, I'd just thought I would say something positive about the doin it your self thing... Carry on. rotnroby.

I know the latin players really are tough players.I have a half brother who played in Mexico in the late 60' thru the early 80's,he was inducted into Mexico's Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1999.......only about 110 presently in the Hall.....They called him Caballo de Fiero...meaning Iron Horse....His name is Gregorio Luque....back to self fixing.....I didn't want to get my hands dirty again but I can't see paying $60.00 and up for a valve job.I remember how I use whip engines out and replace clutches and pressure plates....it's all slowly coming back.
