As always, special guests are a special part of the IKN weekend. As of now, we can proudly announce that Alex Dearborn, designer and builder of the Deserter is coming to Carlisle. The Deserters were born in the late '60s with the Series One model and ran through the GT version in '72. Alex has a storied history in the automotive world and because there is still a strong following for Deserters to this day and the kits that followed, having Alex at Carlisle makes perfect sense.

Who doesn't enjoy a good race car; either in action or on display? The Import & Kit Nationals Race Car Paddock is a highlight area of the showfield each year and is located just inside Gate 3. The Race Car Paddock is reserved exclusively for imports and kits that are set up for racing. All race cars are eligible - from road racers and autocross to drag and rally cars. Don't miss a chance to check it out, or better yet, participate.
Just a quick note on the Alex Dearborn post up above - Alex is also a current member of the Boston area TYP 356 club and owns a couple of 356's. I can't remember if he has a Speedster or not - it's been a while since I was on a run with him.

BUT! For those of you who may have never thought that you've seen one of his gorgeous buggy creations, that was a Deserter that Steve McQueen chose to drive on the beach in his movie "The Thomas Crowne Affair". I believe it had a 140hp Corvair motor in it, but it was a beautiful car and McQueen loved to drive it.

Our own "Boston Bob" Elliot on here has a Deserter, as well, and that show I go to at the Herbert Candy Mansion (where I usually bump into TC) usually has a bunch show up from the NE Deserter club. Beautiful cars, and Alex is a really cool guy.

Check out his website, here: http://www.dearbornauto.com/

McQueen's car was a Deserter GT and looks like this:

I just bought a book on 'McQueen's Machines', and it has a good section in it on the beach buggy they used in that movie, and interesting comments on how Faye Dunaway was such a good sport during the driving scenes.

Apologies for hijacking this thread.

BUT - and this is very relevant - Steve's first racecar was a Speedster - a nice black one which he bought back later in his career, and the book has a good section on that car, and his races in it, with photos. It had knock-off disc wheels, a rare option at the time.

ATTEND THE SHOW AND WIN A CAR
A FIAT X-1/9 Can Be Yours

2012 might be the year of the FIAT, if not from a sales stand point, then from a conversation stand point. The FIAT 500 marks the re-birth of the FIAT brand in the states and as the Import & Kit weekend celebrates Italian cars, we want you to win one too. Up for grabs will be a 1978 FIAT X-1/9. The car comes complete with a removable Targa top, four-cylinder engine, manual transmission and a modern CD player. Crank up your Andrea Bocelli tunes and good luck!

STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE JUDGING

Although the Import & Kit Nationals is more widely known for its relaxed atmosphere and cars on display in the field without the pressures of being judged there are some cars that stand out above the crowd. If you own one of these vehicles and would like to have it evaluated by a team of automotive experts then you might want to consider participating in the Standard of Excellence judging. Registration is limited to 12 vehicles. Applicants must register for the Standard of Excellence judging and submit photos of their vehicle. If you think your vehicle has what it takes to make the grade, click the link below to register.

AUTOCROSS IS BACK

Turn left, turn right and enjoy the ride! Autocross returns to Carlisle and once again you can take part for the sake of competition, bragging rights or simply for fun. An annual part of the Import & Kit Nationals is the ability to drive your car around the Autocross track. The track has the feel of a road course and features six turns as well as elevation changes. Why do you do this? We suspect the answers will vary, but either way, you compete against the clock and the elements. During the 2011 event, 31 cars took a trip around the course. Members of the Susquehanna region of the SCCA and its chapter club, the Appalachian Sports Car Club, are present throughout the event to help you in your quest of automotive dominance!
