Congratulations to all particiapants,

Once again we've registered enough Carlisle registrations to get our own FREE tent on the showfield! I've submitted the necessary paperwork and also ordered (not free) two tables and 20 chairs for the tent.  Note: The tent is a popular hangout during the day so, if you can, bring your folding chairs too.

Carlisle is also doing FREE vending spaces for the clubs that participate in the Club Tent Program.  Based on the size of our tent, we will receive 2 - 4 vending spaces in the swap meet area.  This is a great opportunity for members who don’t have enough parts to sell to justify getting their own space to pool together and share the spaces.  It also helps to have someone to help run the spaces for the weekend.   Please contact me if anyone is interested in utilizing these spaces.

45 days to Carlisle!

If you are coming to Carlisle for all four days, one day or even a few hours we need to know. It's always difficult to plan without knowing how many to expect.  With our 10-year anniversary, this year will be special...we'll even have some free handouts and other surprises but you'll miss out if you don't let us know in advance that you're coming. RSVP to me at bstumpp at comcast dot net and I'll get you on the list.

Drive 'em, trailer 'em, tow 'em but get them there somehow!

Highlights of the weekend? It's hard to pick them but here are a few:

Thursday evening cruise to dinner at the Caddyshack.

This annual country-side drive to good food is annual favorite.

Friday morning cruise to the Carlisle fairgrounds for “egg sammiches”, late registration, setting up the tent and an early walk-through of the swap meet.

Friday post-lunch cruise: ice cream, go-karts or back to the hotel.

Grab lunch at the fairgrounds and then take one of three routes back to the hotel with time to prepare for the evening's activities.

Friday evening cruise of the “Gold Mine Run” to the Bruce Larson museum.

This cruise is extremely scenic, and culminates in a descent down "Gold Mine Run" which used to be included on the Pennsylvania Hill Climb calendar (albeit the other direction). It's a great run!

The tour is still a work-in-progress pending a decision on Bruce's summer vintage racing schedule, we should know soon. If we can't make it happen we'll just cruise right to dinner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Larson

Cruise from Larson's museum to the scenic Stoney Creek Inn for dinner.

Plans are still coming together for dinner. We'll be ordering from the menus with separate checks. Maybe free hors d' oeuvres?

Saturday at the Carlisle fairgrounds

Shine 'em up, spend all day. Walk the showfield, see the imports, see what's new in replicas, socialize under the club tent, free seminars, ride the tram, listen to live music, tour the invitational display, watch the autocross, drive the autocross, be in the group photo, and much more.

Pool party

Relax and cool off at the hotel pool after a hot day at the fairgrounds and before getting ready for the evening's activities.

Saturday Evening Gala Awards Dinner

New venue this year with plenty of great food, free hors d' oeuvres, distance awards presentations, 10-year celebration, door prizes and giveaways. Don't forget your Hawaiian shirt!

Annual raffle

A new schedule this year, we're holding the raffle in the hotel hospitality suite when we return from dinner. It's our one fund raiser to cover weekend expenses. Everyone brings a contribution for the raffle – new parts, products, goodies, memorabilia, etc. Fun and always great things to win.

More?

Of course then there are the 10-year freebies, evening gatherings in the hospitality suite and on the patio, photo sessions in the parking lot, making new friends, seeing old friends, checking out everyone's modifications and new rides,...

Good news!!

Just received confirmation that a tour of Bruce Larson's personal museum will be part of our Friday dinner cruise.

Bruce Larson is a retired American drag racer from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.[1] He became nationally known for his match races. He quit drag racing during the early 1980s. He returned in 1985 on the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car tour and won the 1989 NHRA Funny Car championship. Larson is remembered for his red, white, and blue USA-1 Chevrolet.

Bruce is currently back on tour with a recently-completed replica tribute of his winning Camaro funny car.    http://www.brucelarsonusa-1.com/

He was inducted in numerous Halls of Fame. Don Garlits' International Drag Racing Hall of Fame inducted Larson in 2006.[2][3] Larson was inducted in the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame in 2003, and the Eastern Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 2004, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Super Stock Magazine Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1995.[3]  Other awards that he received during his career include: the Al Holbert Memorial Award, the 1989 Car Craft magazine Driver of the year, the 1989 Eastern Motorsport Press Association Driver of the Year, 1980 Jungle Jim Liberman Memorial Award, and the ’89 NHRA Northeast Division N.E.D. of the Year Award.[3]

THANKS to Jim Chichi and Chuck Martin for taking the lead on planning the Friday cruise, tour and dinner arrangements!

Want more to do in Carlisle... ...how about some seminars?:

Seminar - Forgotten Fiberglass Seminar - Forgotten Fiberglass
Join Harold Pace of Kit Car Builder

Why attend this Seminar? When you are explaining your interest in specialty cars it is important that you know the historical context. We are sure you are familiar with the question, “What is it?” or “Who built it?” This seminar will help you understand the history and impact of specialty cars on the automotive world allowing you to wow your audience with your highly credible, in-depth answers to their questions! Too long untold….too long forgotten…the history of building your own sports car in postwar America has long been clouded in mystery, intrigue, and controversy. Join us for our first ever seminar on this lost time in America chaired by our veteran speaker Harold Pace and welcoming for the first time the folks from Forgotten Fiberglass: Geoff Hacker and Rick D’Louhy. Their seminar will be set up in panel style with all three speakers taking turns to review the history of handcrafted sports cars spanning the 40s, 50s, and 60s such as the Glasspar G2, Woodill Wildfire, Grantham Stardust, Chicagoan, Devin, LaDawri, Kellison, Fiberfab, CRV, and others.

Seminar - Origins and Design of the Cobra Daytona Coupe Seminar - Origins and Design of the Cobra Daytona Coupe
Join Peter Brock of BRE For This Session

Peter Brock worked on the design of the ’63 Corvette Stingray and had great success with his race team, Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) but in between those two milestones he also worked for Shelby American. While at Shelby American, Brock designed the World Championship winning Cobra Daytona Coupe. Join Brock as he discusses the origins and design of the Cobra Daytona Coupe.

Seminar - Rust Repair and Welding Seminar - Rust Repair and Welding
Join Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks

As long as your classic isn’t made of fiberglass (and even if it is), you’re going to have to deal with rust repair at some point. Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks and Classic Motorsports Magazine will discuss how to keep rust away, how to repair it when necessary, and how to develop good welding skills along the way.

Seminar - Which Carb is Best? Seminar - Which Carb is Best?
Join Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks

There are always rivalries in the classic car world: Ford vs. Chevy, MG vs. Triumph, coupe vs. convertible. Among the most polarizing are debates about carbs: SU vs. Weber. European vs Japanese, even carbs vs. fuel injection. Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks and Classic Motorsports Magazine will discuss how to decide which setup will work best for you, along with some basic tuning hints and some thoughts about dealing with modern ethanol-blended fuels

Every year in the past Carlisle has given away a car on Sunday at the Import & Replica weekend, this was one way they kept more people around on Sunday afternoon.  In fact, our own Al Shapiro once won a Fiat, drove it home and sold it for a few bucks.  For those of you who were feeling lucky and were hoping to win the car I'm sorry to report that they will not be giving one away this year.  When I checked with the Carlisle manager he reported "It's pretty complicated but basically the rules for conducting a raffle got too complex in PA.  We could no longer require the winner to be present - we had to open the raffle up to EVERYONE and they did NOT need to be present to win.  That meant people could register online AND win all while sitting in Oregon without ever attending a show in Carlisle.  We are looking for ways around this but haven't found anything yet..."

There's still plenty more going on that weekend and don't forget our annual raffle Saturday night in the hotel hospitality suite immediately following the awards dinner.  As usual, there is going to be some great stuff available there.

So you're saying "What else can I do while I'm at Carlisle?".  Well, how about driving your Speedie over the hill to the autocross track.  During the 2012 event, 59 cars (not Speedsters) took a trip around the course.  Rumor has it a couple of the MG guys are doing the autocross this year, how about you Speedster guys?

Carlisle 200426

Or maybe take your Speedster for a balancing challenge on the "Steel Yard".  Ed, the Carlisle manager said they still have it, he just forgets to bring it out.  So if we ask he'll bring it out for everyone to play.  Anyone interested?

Random thoughts about Carlisle:

I was just out in the shop collecting "stuff" for the trip and remembered that Chris and I decided to come down on Thursday the first time in 2006, so we could get things ready for the "Great and Glorious Speedster Build" starting Friday morning (it can't be a "Speedstah", cuz it ain't from Boston!)  Since we were showing up a day early, Wild Bill found us a place to "cruise to" for dinner that night, and that was the "Caddy Shack" out at the Armitage Country Club.

IIRC, the cruise directions that night were: "Hey!  Saddle Up!  Follow me!" and we all took off behind Bill - maybe six of us.  Chris had to use his new, fancy-schmancy Blackberry-thingie with Google Maps to find out where the hell we were when we got lost, going back to the hotel after dinner.

We've been going back there ever since, eight years in a row, and it's become a perennial favorite of mine - always good food, always good service, Kick-Ass Margaritas and ALWAYS good friends (and cars).  Besides, now that John Estes has found it, he always plays a round of golf there on Friday - has been for years and says the place is great.

At least this year we'll have our trusty GPS voice, 'Mullet Man' (aka, 'Rufus'), to get us home and we now have professional, "Wild Bill" route instructions where-ever we go.

Hey!  It's Tuesday of the week before Carlisle!

Shouldn't Lane be on the road by now??
