Carlisle testimonial by Al Gallo, Massachusetts:

As someone said a few years ago, " It's like a big family reunion....except you like everybody". Like minded people with backgrounds that are all over the map, and believe it or not, we even talk about stuff other than cars.

2014 would have been our 6th year in a row, but an elder care situation required that we stay home.  We may be going on a vacation right after Carlisle, so we may be in the dreaded DD as well. But we did it before and still had a great time without worrying about the weather. There are usually a few empty right seats for the cruises if you really need to ride in a speedster or spyder.  It's really about the atmosphere and the people.

WHAT IS PLANNED FOR FRIDAY?

We start right off Friday morning with two options:

1.Countryside cruise to the fairgrounds

Enjoy a leisurely self-directed cruise to the fairgrounds and spend the day there. This option is for the folks who are itching to get to the fairgrounds and want to take a more leisurely scenic route to get there. Route instructions will be provided at the driver's meeting in the hotel parking lot and the cruise will be self-guided.

2. Countryside cruise and tour of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR)

This will be an organized cruise to the EMMR and a tour of the museum. If you're into cars and love racing then don't miss this. The EMMR is described “While the museum strongly reflects the popularity of the open wheel, dirt track racing so popular throughout the northeast, you can also see a wide variety of racing machines from many other forms of racing. These include everything from sprint cars, midgets and stock cars to motorcycles, Indy cars, NASCAR, drag racing and more!” Don't miss this tour! There is no entry fee, donations only. After the tour we'll cruise to the fairgrounds to register, get lunch and enjoy the Carlisle events.

At the fairgrounds there will be plenty to see – replica/kit manufacturer displays, meet manufacturer reps, experience a huge field of replica and import cars, live music, free seminars, great food options under the grandstand, a swap meet, the autocross, cars for sale and more. Spend some time and relax in the Speedsters Meet Spyders tent too.

Around 5:00 PM we'll gather in the parking lot of the Courtyard Marriott for a photo session and drivers meeting. Dress is casual and Hawaiian shirts are again popular but make sure you save one for the Saturday evening awards dinner. We'll hand out a list of restaurants in the area for our “Restaurant Scramble” when we'll all buddy-up and choose where the want to eat. Our group is getting a bit large for restaurants to handle all of us at one time so we can avoid the hoards and dine where ever you prefer. There are several good restaurants in the area with a variety of food choices so finding a place to eat won't be difficult.

Following dinner everyone will head back to the hotel. Then head to the hospitality suite at the Courtyard Marriott for more socializing and parting. By 9:00 things are rolling and the room fills up. BYOB and snacks and spend the rest of the evening making new friends, catching up with old friends and telling stories – sometimes to 1:00 AM and later.

Have fun, get some rest...tomorrow is our big day on the Carlisle showfield.

Every year Carlisle provides several FREE seminars during the Import/Kit Nationals and they are included in the price of your Carlisle registration. In fact, some of them are presented just across from our tent. Following are six seminars just announced that are probably of the most interest to our group:

1) Practical Tips on Picking Your Next Project Car - Trying to figure out which vehicle to choose for your next buildup? Steve Temple, Editor and Publisher for CAR BUILDER Magazine, will be hosting an informative and entertaining seminar on this subject at the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals on both Friday and Saturday. Topics to be covered include chassis types, suspension setups, engine selection, resale value, and ways to keep buildup costs more affordable. In addition, all seminar attendees will be able to sign up for a free subscription to CAR BUILDER Magazine.

2) Preventing the Ethanol Destruction of Carburetors - This seminar will provide attendees with an explanation of ethanol in today’s fuels and why ethanol destroys carbureted fuel systems. After a little background information, you’ll be educated with ways to prevent damage to your fuel system along with products to solve these problems. It will conclude with a Q&A session to allow you to get your specific questions answered by the experts.

3) The Truth About Oil - This seminar will first focus on oil with some history, trivia, “Motor Oil 101” explaining zinc and a review of how oil specifications have changed over the years and why. There will be a strong emphasis on the changes to “SM” & “SN” specifications in 2004 and 2010. For the first time in the history of motor oil in the US, the oil companies were unable to meet the EPA catalytic converter restrictions (150,000 mile warranty) with an oil that is suitable for older cars with flat tappet cams. The latest specifications have enough detergent to clean the "zinc" right out of the engine.

4) Dune Buggies - Bruce Meyers will present a video on the history of the dune buggy. Following the video, Bruce will give a brief talk then open the floor to Q&A from the audience. He will discuss the various aspects of the dune buggy from its history to its many successes in motorsports. Following the seminar, Bruce will have even more Q&A time with the audience. Don't miss out on this unique experience with Bruce Meyers, the creator of the fiberglass dune buggy. His San Diego-based shop, Meyers Manx, Inc. is still building buggies today!

5) Rust Repair and Welding - As long as your classic isn't made of fiberglass (and even if it is), you're going to have to deal with rust repair at some point. Carl Heideman from Eclectic Motorworks and Classic Motorsports Magazine will discuss how to keep rust away, how to repair it when necessary, and how to develop good welding skills along the way.

6) Performance for Your Classic - Carl Heideman owns Eclectic Motorworks LLC in Michigan, a shop that specializes in service, restoration, sheet metal work, and performance upgrades for classic European and other interesting cars. Carl offers performance recipes for many classic imports based on data from over 1000 dyno pulls and tests of hundreds of performance parts over the past 20 years. Topics include ignition, carb, and exhaust upgrades, internal engine modifications, fuel injection, supercharging and more. Applicable to many makes and models, much of the discussion is based on data from MGBs and Midgets.

And following are a few more but perhaps not as closely related:

7) Our Experiences Buying, Owning and Maintaining a Citroen DS21
Paul & Rose Anderson, from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania will give a seminar on their experience finding a Citroen DS21 in Europe, importing and shipping it to the USA, doing needed repairs, and maintaining it. Rose will give the wife’s point of view!

8) Recreating Citroën’s “ID19 Sur Ballons – 1959 - Dave Agar from New Philadelphia, Ohio will give a seminar on his recreation of one of Citroën’s best known advertising designs for the Citroen ID/DS. In 1959, Citroën created an ad showing a car “floating on air”….with red balloons for wheels. Dave is in the process of recreating this car, full scale, and ready to drive. The car will be on display, and Dave will talk about how he got involved and the challenges and satisfactions of this project.

9) Trionic 5 Conversion for your Classic 900: Demystified - A lot of internet myth and mystery surround the Trionic 5 engine management system, especially when utilizing it for a classic 900. Jordan Pagano, from eEuroparts.com, explains the pros and cons of the system and what is involved in the conversion so you can make the decision on whether to jump on the T5 bandwagon. Jordan has done more conversions than anyone in the country as well as developed products to make the conversion as easy and seamless as possible. Cut through the myths to find out if Trionic is right for you and how to get started. Mike D, of Mike D Tuning, will also be available to share his conversion experience and will be answering questions after the seminar.

10) Tips for Rebuilding an MG Engine and How to Rebuild Your MG – Join the legendary and highly skilled John Twist of University Motors as he talks shop on a pair of topics during event weekend. John returns to Carlisle by popular demand and will be entertaining and educating you on his import of choice, the MG. John will teach you about rebuilding the MG and once you’ve done that, how to rebuild the MG engine too. John’s very passionate about the MG and he’ll be sharing his knowledge with you on one of Brittan’s most popular exports to the states.
