WEEKEND AWARDS

Every year we strive to recognize people who travel the farthest. This year we will present threedistance awards at the Saturday Evening Awards dinner:

  1. the longest distance traveled (driven or trailered) by a 356

  2. the longest distance traveled (driven or trailered) by a 550

  3. the longest distance traveled (driven or trailered) by an MG.

    The rules are:

You may only win two consecutive years.

You must be present at the Saturday evening awards dinner to win.

To be considered for one of these awards you must have driven or trailered your ride contiguous days on your trip to Carlisle no matter what route you take to get there. You may stop no more than one night at a time to rest during the trip – one two-day stop will be allowed for mechanical issues. Total accumulated miles will be used. If you stop longer than one night than your total mileage will only be calculated from where you began your trip to Carlisle.

As an example, if someone in Iowa decides to leave on their trip to Carlisle by driving to California first, their total miles – Iowa to Caliornia to Carlisle - will be considered IF they stop no more than one night at a time. If they stop longer than one night – other than for mechanical issues - than their total mileage will only be calculated from where they started, in this example, from Iowa to Carlisle.

Other awards will be presented at the Saturday evening awards dinner but the rules for those awards are a little more “loosey, goosey”.

This a fun weekend gathering and not a competitive car show so no awards are presented for best car, best paint, best interior or any similar “my car is prettier than yours” awards.
Come out and join us, bring your 356, 550 or MG, and have a good time!

The intent of the "Patina Award" was not to make fun of people's cars but to suggest perhaps there might be interest in replicating a different,  more realistic appearance.   Gawkers might believe that the shiny, perfect vehicle driving down the street is not a "real" 356 because "who would drive a multi-$100,000 car like that around".  So what if a 356 was built showing a little wear and tear, perhaps some faux rust, and maybe a few imperfections.  THAT might throw off your standard pedestrian and make your car just a little different from all the rest.

The streetrod group picked up on this a few years ago with a look that evolved into a style called the "rat rod".  I've seen fiberglass streetrods that were faux-painted with some primer and other imperfections/"rust" in such a way that you would have to look very closely to realize it was not steel.   Maybe there is a place for some to build "rat 356's".

Again, the intent of the award was not to consider a car "ugly" but to recognize and give attention to that look and perhaps generate more being built that way just to see what direction that might take. My apologies if the intent of the award was lost, there won't be any more in the future.

3 days to go!!!

Following are some last-minute reminders and updates emailed few days ago:

WEEKEND SCHEDULE
Copies will also be posted at the Marriott hotel entrances and in the Carlisle show field tent.  (A copy is also provided above).
 CARLISLE REGISTRATION
If you pre-registered with Carlisle you should have already received your window sticker and "goody bag" pickup letter. Don't forget them!!  If you didn't pre-register, you'll be able to do so Friday or Saturday at gate #3.
CARLISLE IMPORT & PERFORMANCE NATIONALS OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE
You will receive a copy of the guide in your Carlisle goody bag. It will include full details about the activities and times on the fairgrounds over the weekend.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES ON THE SCHEDULE - THE AUTOCROSS & DRIFTING, VEHICLE LIMBO CONTEST, SEMINARS, POOL PARTY
Autocross & Drifting: Several times are scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check the Carlisle schedule in your program when you arrive at the fairgrounds. There is a super vantage point to watch from the hill overlooking the course so walk or drive up the big hill and check it out. .
Vehicle limbo contest – 1:00 PM Saturday in front of the grandstand there will be a vehicle limbo contest. We may have a few participants to cheer on and I think our Spyder owners could have a real strong chance of winning this one (hint, hint)!
 GROUP PHOTO
Every year Carlisle rolls out their skycrane and takes group photos of us and all our cars. The time they call for us to gather tends to vary. So watch for an announced time to be posted in our tent and try to be there so we can get everyone and their cars in the photos.
FRIDAY COUNTRYSIDE ROAD CRUISE AND RIVERBOAT TOUR
We have over 50 people registered for our road cruise and private tour aboard "the Pride of the Susquehanna" - and we have room for more!. Don't miss out, if you want to join us and haven't made a reservation, make sure you let me know sometime before Friday the 19th.  In addition, our "potty break" location will be "the Old Sled Works" where Lightning Guider sled production began in a two block long factory back in 1904.  It is now a 30,000 sq ft antique and craft market with a sled museum, old soda fountain and penny arcade. For those folks who are joining us – don't forget your camera!
 COMPLIMENTARY HAPPY HOUR
If you're staying at the Marriott don't forget to join us in the hotel lounge Friday from 4:30-5:30PM. Every person registered in the hotel will receive a coupon for a complimentary drink - wine or beer – and free wings, meatballs, cheese, and crackers.
 THE MARRIOTT HOSPITALITY SUITE
Join us every night in the Marriott hospitality suite. A big part of the weekend is meeting old and new friends and socializing. The hospitality suite will be located on the first floor to the right of the lobby and many of us will be gathering there every evening. To say the hospitality suite is jumping in the evening is an understatement! Stop by, even if you’re tired, don’t miss the gathering there. We've even had some celebrity sightings in the past so don’t miss it. The party starts around 9:00 PM and goes to ???. BYOB or favorite beverages and some snacks and join the party!
GALA SATURDAY EVENING AWARDS DINNER AT THE RADISSON
If you don’t know how to get to the Radisson we will have a caravan leaving from the Marriott around 6:00 PM.  We will again park in the lot behind the hotel. We'll have door prizes - no purchase or donation required. One other thing to remember about dinner…suggested dress is casual with a recommendation for everyone to wear their favorite Hawaiian/tropical shirt.
 ANNUAL SATURDAY EVENING RAFFLE
Don't forget to pack your donation(s) for the raffle. If possible, please bring one or more items such as new parts, memorabilia, books, art work, car care products, related items, etc. Tickets will be sold in the hospitality suite just before the start of the raffle. It's always a fun time and great things to win so plan to join us.
 CARAVANS
If you like to travel with a group, there are a couple of caravans heading from several directions. If you are interested, here are the threads on the Speedsterowners.com forum or create and post your own:
NAMETAGS
A nametag will be printed and ready for everyone who has RSVP'd so look for me and the nametag box when you arrive. Remember to wear your nametag or you'll go hungry Saturday night!
CLEANING YOUR RIDE
There will be a hose hooked up behind the Marriott for everyone's use. There are also several wash stations on the Carlisle fairgrounds about 50 yards on the left inside Gate #3.
This is expected to be another fun, full weekend and we're looking forward to meeting for the FOURTEENTH year.  Any questions? Let me know.
That we're anxious to see everyone again is an understatement. We'll see you in Carlisle! Drive 'em, trailer 'em, tow 'em - but get them there somehow!
 Cheers,
"East Coast" Bruce

Sorry, I don't have photos yet, but the parking lot repair crew has been busy with clutch adjustments (Kelly), a new shift coupler (WildBill), a loose rear hub castle nut (Tom Buchanan), fuel pump related vapor lock (Tom Marantz), and sundry small things.

Oh!  And Joe Fortino's car got backed into at the evening's restaurant, gouging the hood and jamming it shut.  At least the other driver left a note and phone #.

All in all, a busier than normal Friday here in sweltering corn country.

I did not bring my car, so have been riding with Tom Marantz in his suby-coupe.  It was a tough assignment (it's wicked hot here for coupe or Speedster) but he has really effective air conditioning so we managed to survive the day's heat.  I have GOT to get A/C, now, for my car!

The ride on the Susquehana riverboat was pretty cool (had a nice chat with Jack Crosby) and the ride getting there was stellar, as always.  The return trip navigator (me) kept getting us lost until I figured out how to use Google Maps, so we saw a little more of the surrounding towns that most people did......

Looking forward to the showfield tomorrow!
