First, I want to thank Jen for all the work she has done for the past 2 years planning our annual SOC event (I'm pretty sure she did most of the work rather than Blake, but thank you Blake for your moral support of Jen)

I would also like to thank Warren & Karen for opening up their great home for the Friday gathering.

We have done Paso for a few years, we did Morro Bay for a few years & Pismo for a few, &

as most of you know, the West coasters are a fickle bunch, & we get tired of the same thing every

year (right Dusty?) Soooooo.....In the interest of changing things up a bit....

I somehow got volunteered to plan the 2013 event. ( I think Jen caught me after a few scotches, or maybe it was when we were in the Jakoozeeeeee)...

On the way back from Pismo Teri & I stopped in Solvang for lunch, & decided to look at lodging for a

possible event there....The Marriot has a hotel a few blocks off the 101 Boulton/Solvang exit....

It is rather up-scale from what we are used to further north, but the climate is much warmer, the runs thru the canyons are in your face with wineries all over the place (Fess Parker & Firestone as an example). there are small towns in the area, (Solvang, Los Alivos, Los Alamos to name a few), with Antique shops & plenty of food/bars....

We have had runs thru these canyons before, & I think everyone had a good time....

The Hotel has banquet facilities, Restaurant/full bar, pool , and we can have a hospitality suite at our disposal...& special parking for our tubs.....

The cost of the hotel with amenities that we are accostom to + hospitality suite will be approx 50.00

more than Pismo, banquet cost is similar to Pismo....

This will be my suggestion for the 2013 meet.

I am taking suggestions from anyone interested, but if you make a suggestion, give me some details, like cost, things to do in the area etc....

We need to have plenty of time to make the arrangements, so don't wait to long to chime in here....

So be thinking about this, and let me know what you think....

I agree with Theron. It's a bit too far for NorCal and more pricey to boot.

I wouldn't mind Paso again.

How about Carmel?

Another thought would be a North/South event like they do with the 356 club: one year it's hosted by the SoCal members in Solvang and the next year it's hosted by the NorCal group in Carmel. I'm just picking these venues out of my ass, they could be any number of places associated with the north or south regions.

I have no problem with Carmel, one of Teri's favorite places, but if 50.00 scares you wait till you see the cost of Carmel..that & trying to get a hotel right now for next June anywhere along the coast in No Cal....please try....

Paso also works for me, but lets understand one thing, this year almost everyone came from So Cal, almost nobody from the North......So I have to wonder why, all the northern folks didn't show....explain that to me....

We have a yearly event, I  don't know about you, but I look forward to this every year, I plan around it, don't give me some lame ass excuse why you can't make it, you have a whole year to prepare....

It's been 13 hours, and no response from anyone north of Pismo/Morro/Paso....
I am in favor of suggestions from the North, since the So Cal bunch in general have no problem traveling in these tubs, great distances.....The issue  will most likely end up being availability of a venue. I will be in Monterey in August for the auctions/races/concours, planned months ago, and availability of lodging was a big problem for my wife, and knowing from past experience that is not the only month with limited lodging....there always seems to be things going on along the coast...

I have stayed several times at the Best Western in San Simeon (Hurst Castle area)

they have lodging, restaurant with Banquet facilities, on the beach with fire pits,

elephant seals, exellent location, but not much in the area for cruises unless you travel south to Cambria....

this would be my second choice...I will provide the name of the hotel later or you can look up Best Western San Simeon....

Coming in 2nd on my cruise experience to PCH & Mulholand with the SoCal guys was PCH between San Simeon and Monterrey. There was a place on a bend that was an art gallery/coffee spot made from old wooden water towers.  You could sit on top of the tower and drink your coffee and enjoy the view.  I would love to visit that again.  PCH offered more of a challenge on this stretch.

I would have been there this year had it not been for two reasons; Penny was without an engine and I had a job that was time sensitive and required me to work that weekend.

I like seeing you guys but with the way work is in this current economy you take it when it comes along and, really, it's not nearly as much fun going to a car gathering driving in a work truck.

This year (2013) is obviously Vince's year and a SoCal event. Pick where you want but please be somewhat sensitive to us Northerners. Solvang could work but Paso Robles or San Simeon would be preferred.

When 2014 rolls around I'm sure NorCal can come up with a decent venue. Monterey/Carmel, Lake Tahoe, Napa/Sonoma...hell, maybe we could arrange track time at Infineon Raceway!

I am not trying to separate the North from the South, but every year we get less response from the North, it was most noticeable this year....So I ask, why drive 400 + miles....

That's one aspect, the other is cold weather along the coast. I have been asked to pick a warmer  climate, Paso works but we have done that for a few years and ended up not being wanted by the city for reasons still unexplained...Solvang seems like a logical choice....

I recommended the "Best Western cavalier" in San Simeon a few years back but nobody responded, main problem again, right on the water with bad weather most of the day...

I can not argue with people who have issues and/or excuses for not showing up, $hit happens.

I also prefer that we not have "North vs South" every other year, but if that is what it takes to make everyone happy, that's cool........

I think it would be nice for some of you Northerners to chime in here as to your planned participation in 2013 if we keep it centrally located, in lets say Paso....

I suggest we keep an open dialog, since this site has always been a democracy,as far as what/when/where we go and/or do. either come to an agreement or I will be forced to pull a "Dusty" and make the decision for us, and right now Solvang is in the lead for 2013...

If we are considering the Carmel area, then why not also consider the Yosemite or even the Tahoe areas?  Two incredibly beautiful areas with spectacular drives.

I know there is a lot of focus on the distance that the So Cal drivers (the biggest contingent) would have to drive, but hell, IM owners drive all the way to Washington for a gathering and Corvette owners drive all the way to Kentucky!

Troy, Here's the thing for me, after a few years on the cement or blacktop at Knotts, it was apparent the So.Cal. guys wanted a different venue. I have been doing the trip to Monterey for years and suggested Paso Robles so that the Northern guys didn't have to drive all the way to SoCal, that turned out to be a good thing for everyone, we did Paso, Morro Bay & Pismo, but each year we see less from the North bunch. Granted the SoCal guys don't have an issue going North, but if those guys are not going to make the effort to even join in, then we have tons of options. I must state that I like the northern guys a lot, but whats fair is fair....show up.....I was actually disappointed not to see Terry, Dale, Henry (although I did see Henry in Carlisle)and a few others that will remain unnamed...

I think Yosemite is a great option, find lodging with about 20 rooms, within a budget that fits everyone, Banquet facility, & Teri will take it from there....I can drink Scotch under a tall pine or redwood any day....

It is obvious just from the few SoCal guys we have heard from that they are willing to do the miles, me included...

How about San Luis Obispo? For the SoCal contingent, just 10 miles further north of Pismo, but far enough inland from the coast to have sunshine when Pismo is socked in. Within cruising distance of both the coast highways or inland wineries.

Also, to encourage attendance by folks with their Speedster 'projects' still in the works, or Newbies looking for a Speedy, or just plain car-enthusiasts who would like to bring their current favorite car (whatever it is), we should rename this the 'Run-What-You-Brung West Coast Cruise'.

FYI. If choosing SLO (or any other area) we may need to consider changing dates.  I know the first weekend of June is the Concours -- it may, or may not, significantly impact room availability.

Blake and I will go anywhere within 5 hours of The Bu. Solvang sounds awesome. But, I'm not planning this non-event, so just tell me where go and I'll be there, ready to get my party on with no responsibilities!!!!

Obviously, for Bob and I it is not about the "ride".The car again on back burner. I am just out of a 5 day hospital stay and the car sits even longer. I am addding this beacuse The Pismo event meant even more after seeing what faced me when we got home.  We will try to make wherever it is. Pismo was a 4 hour+ for us, farther for others north of us. I missed the north showing this year but to repeat, such is life. It will work out however, I am glad you are asking for input and keeping options open. Bob and Jessica.

Doug, This group likes change, some even like heat, since my suggestion of Solvang didn't go over so well (to far south), I got the impression some would prefer inland but centrally located like either Paso again or SLO...I do need some hotel suggestions for SLO....

I already have info on the Adalaide in Paso, who has been kind to us in the past...

but another one in Paso would be nice...

has anyone gone on line and looked at the Best Western Cavalier in San Simeon.....

2013 better be the year the north has a better showing, or 2014 will be in Solvang for sure...

Free Happy Hour!

Free Breakfast!

Expensive Rooms! Around $170/night.

No room at the hotel the weekend of 6/7-9/13. I think that's when North/South is in town.

Available the week before 5/31-6/2.

The rooms pay for themselves with that Free Happyhour stuff.

Holy crap, you know how much damage I would do at $170 a night with free happy hour?  Yeah... that's a free room practically.  IN!
