Spyder: Aquamarine Blue Metallic?

In my opinion, Spyders look best in silver and white. Black is another good choice. The only blue color I like is French blue with yellow darts, or Blue Angels blue(Ron Mullis's car).

All other colors don't seem to do the shape justice. I'm not even a fan of the Beck silver/blue, that one is just OK for me.

Danny sounds very "New England", there - Just blue or white.  The West Coasters seem to be more daring in Spyder color choices.

I'm digging trough a lot of old Carlisle photos, but here is Carey Hines' "Old Blue" and yes, I know it's a Speedster but it might give you some ideas:

Actually, I've see a bunch of different Spyder colors and several shades of blue, along with one ar Amelia Island Concours in "Big Bird" yellow.  

Dark blue with white or light blue darts looks good.  Red darts, too.  Metallic Silver darts on a dark blue body might look cool - Photoshop might be your friend, here.

I'm partial to a darker silver, but light ivory was 2nd.

Black would also work, but I wanted something lighter. I even considered Signal Orange. That would be good for visibility by moron drivers.

However, the photo included in Porsche Spyder handbook shows what appears to be a black and white (photo is B&W, who knows) car. Nothing more beautiful than a black car...but they are never clean. Black with a red interior would be a killer.

I have to admit, some years ago I slipped into “Get Off My Lawn” territory and one of the signs of being an old fuddy duddy is being a strict traditionalist. Factory Spyders originally were four colors, White, Red, Silver and this “baby-puke green.”

Additionally, several were painted French Racing Blue for French racing drivers.

My friend Bill, who’s a long time Florida racer and Porsche guy told me that prior to Brumos adopting their Red/White/Blue, their race cars were Orange, and afaik, this is a picture of Peter Gregg’s 550 so liveried.

But the bottom line: Paint it whatever color you like. It’s not like it’s going to lose points at a concours because it’s not the OEM color. The only consideration is if you ever plan on selling it, if may be hard to find someone who loves your atypical color as much as you do.

Jim, I think I’ve seen a color picture of that car and iirc it’s red with a white frunk.

I'm with Dave, although I've seen an original 550 Spyder (#57?) in something close to Bali Blue and it supposedly had never been repainted.  I'll see if I can find a photo.   I also think that if a buyer were to throw enough money at Porsche they would paint a car almost any color.

I've seen some really cool Porsches at the track in some really great, non-Porsche liveries.  Colors outside of New England, and especially from the west coast, are more vibrant.  Here's Prarit's car in "Graphite" and with the Ox blood interior it....is....Stunning!

I've often wondered, if this forum had been around when I was building Pearl, would I have been talked into leaving her in her original black or done a different color?

I like the direction I took, and a couple of other cars I've seen at Carlisle have used essentially the same color base coat as mine so I know it's been a hit, even if not an official "Speedster" color.  I just really like it.

Pearl's happy, too.

They even have a name for it now. “Paint to Sample” or PTS in code-speak.

re: mp4, save it to your phone. Hit edit. Do anything. (A slight recrop is the easiest) then save it. Your phone will save the edited version as a jpeg.

Still no joy.  It shows Rainer Cooney starting an original Spyder - Geriatric 6 volt starter and all.  Looks great on my Macbook but the Crowdstack site gives me an error when I try to load it.

I give up.  Poirot is on PBS.  I'm outa here.

Sorry, Gordon, I wasn't thinking clearly. MP4 is a video format. The only way I've ever been able to load videos is uploading them to my YouTube acct and posting the link. This is across every forum I participate in.

Never one to give up on "Tech Stuff" (I'm an IT guy, after all), here is that Video, direct from Youtube of the legendary Rainer Cooney starting a client's car at Paul Russell Restorations after it had been hibernating over the winter (OK, several winters).  Sounds pretty good for a tankful of yucky gas.  Rainer thought it was running poorly, but attributed it to sitting for years AND bad gas.  I thought it smoothed out really quickly.

Gordon....I really like that paint on your "Pearl" !     If I'm not mistaken it's a  pearl white that is sort of a cream color ?  Also I like the Burgundy colored upholstery to go with it !

I have somewhat of a dilemma about using leather upholstery or vinyl. I'm thinking that I'm gonna screw up the leather seats pretty fast by standing on them getting in and out. Perhaps by using vinyl I could replace them 3 times for the lower price difference. Even change the color if desired ?  What say you ?.............Bruce

I would tend to agree.  Vinyl (or “Naugahyde” if you’re a Hot Rodder) it usually less expensive than leather and with the typical stitching involved, just as durable.  Plus, it’s often easier to clean.

I had saddle leather in my F250 and it was STIFF!  Comfortable, but stiff.  The leather in my Nissan Rogue is quite a bit softer, but it tends to wear at rub points faster than the saddle leather.  Vinyl would wear, too, but it maintains the color through the material.

”Pearl’s” color is 1999 Audi Pearlescent White.  It tends to blush slightly pink and a shade of blue/gray depending on how the light hits it.  Under Mercury Vapor lights at night it really pops.

Check out Allante vinyl it feels and looks exactly like soft leather and is durable as well as reasonably priced.

I don't step on my seats getting in and out. I have, on occasion barefoot, but not as general practice. I step NEXT to the seat with my left foot. Maybe that explains why my LEATHER seats are in good condition at 19 years old.

Danny....Barefoot ? I thought you NY guys wouldn't get caught dead going barefoot !  The southern boys would though !   Heck !  The bottom of their feet look like waffles from floor boarding  it all the time !          Bruce

I like to Spyder barefoot in the summer, especially when I AutoX. Seems to help with brake feel/modulation. Plus it's usually 95 degrees and humid.

What the SCCA doesn't know doesn't hurt them LOL!
