does anyone know why replica spyders rear wheel arches seem so much higher than originals?

Ours aren't... very close to the original. Tire fits nicely in there as well. We offer plain smooth rear bonnets as well... this client opted for the louvered carb door.

that's good to know-do you guys make your own bonnets?i thought you used vintage body/chassis,which I have pictured with the high bonnets like beck.
We offer 2 different rear clamshells; the standard/traditional Beck rear as well as a lower fender/flat smile/pronounced wheel arch version.
I've had the opportunity to measure 3 original cars over the years and all 3 were different. I've been told that there were 5 different bucks for the rear deck lids, all with different dimensions and fender heights. If you look at chassis #89 (State of Art ivory car) it is a bit taller than most too, but still not as tall as the traditional Beck. Of course there are also the very early few cars that were taller and more square then even ours...
What I was told by Chuck was that the car he initially patterned off of was wrecked during a race, resulting in the deck lid coming open and flipping backwards, smashing the fender tops. The damage was beat out and body worked, yielding a higher fender profile.
wow, thanks for the info carey-very informative.is there a cost difference between them?
IMHO the higher fenders look better, but are certainly less original.
I like big butts and I cannot lie.

You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung
