guys,

need your help with a quick question, and after reading old post on the topic.

i have a 2013 VS, 1915, type 1, manual transmission built by Kirk.

- during a stop coffee months ago, car would not start, thought it was a dead battery, heard "click" every time I turned key... Tracked it to the starter.

- read all post on the topic.

- battery and all grounds/connections ok. starter switch ok, starter was the problem.

- tapped with hammer as recommended by many... Fixed the problem--- for a few months... But keeps happening, and I'm now at the point where I rather change the faulty starter...  Seems like I'm always under the car tapping the starter when I'm wearing a suit Or during date night with my wife.

- so whent back to the old posts, and there was a recomendation by Alan M. And others to go to Autozone/advanced auto parts and pick up a replacement-  for a "VW beetle Auto- stick Part number 16300",  also known as an "automatic"--- for automatic transmissions.

- located the part.. only one left in WA which I have on hold.

QUESTION-- could any of you guys who have had this problem before and potentially replaced the starter ( or rebuilt engines) confirm if the recommended "auto stick/ automatic trani"  stater will work with a manual transmission 1915cc engine with out any mods?  Is it a simple pug and play?

-  or should I order the part specific for a manual transmission p/n 16450?

i only ask because several post recommended going with the auto tran starter P/n16300... But the most recent post dated back to 2011.

1st picture of "auto stic/ automatic 16300;

2nd picture of manual 16450;

million thanks

Luis

Luis,

Try this trick before climbing under your car next time the starter clicks but doesn't turn over.

Put the car in gear and rock the car back and forth a few times (forward then backwards). Then re-try starting (in neutral). I've had the same symptoms as you (but not very often) and this rocking motion works the few times I've had this happen. I think it either loosens the starter shaft/ bushings or moves flywheel a little for starter to engage. Very unscientific, but it's worked for me, FWIW.

If its happening every time you drive it, then go the starter replacement route.

Best solution is to just suck it up and buy an IMI 101 starter. Gear reduction Japanese motor and American CNC parts for the rest. It is a thing of beauty, and it WILL NOT ever have a heat-soak problem. One of the best things I installed on my car. Install and forget about it...... No pilot bearing needed, and you can use a small battery too.

Million thanks guys!  Will look into the IMi 101 suggested, will try Jims trick as well...

Fortunately the problem is still not coming up every time I drive it.... Just when I happen to be wearing anything other than shorts and and T shirt!

been driving the car as a daily driver these past few months...weather has been great in SEA... But it's thosethose unexpected, and now frequent, days I'm running late to the office or to a dinner date that really got me thinking of just replacing the starter and forgetting about it!

million thanks?

Yes, the IMI will work on your car.

If anyone buys an IMI, I'd love to hear your feedback.  We switched to IMI several years ago and then we started having issues with them more recently.  The Bendix would not index correctly and I got little to no support from IMI, so we switched to the new Compufire high torque starters.  I'd like to say they were trouble free, but they weren't... only difference was that we got support from Compufire when we had issues.

I really, really liked the IMI stuff, so I'd be curious to see if they ever got them sorted out...

Thank you guys.  I ordered a IMI 101 for my 1915cc type 1.  Will report back after install, and putting some miles/ starts on it.

On Sunday i cleaend and greased all the connections for safe measure until I get the part and install it...  Unfortunately I had to "tap-tap it" this evening to get it unbound again...  Sure enough I was wearing a suit and heading to a customer dinner ;-).

...  Why suits and customer dinners in summer you may ask?, I sell new commercial airplanes for a living.  Tons of fun if you like airplanes And airplane people!

For those interested, for the IMI101 I paid 169$ plus shipping from kustom1 ( link provided above).  All other shops I looked at advertized 189$-220$ for the same part number.

great deal...

cheers,

Luis

Guys,  just wanted to post a quick status on the IMI101 starter.

so far it's been great.  I installed it without any problems, no hick-ups to date, and it runs strong.

it was my first time changing a starter... Ever.... So I used various sources to walk me through the removal/ replacement process.

-  the Bentley manual,

- a couple YouTube "how to" videos, (for me the most helpfull as I got to see someone doing the work)

- and a handful of pictures I took before taking the system apart... Mostly so I had a record of how the wiriNG needed to came back together.

... the process took me about 1.5hr - maybe 2 hrs start to finish....  Slow, But I didn't want to get things wrong!

Hardest part-   putting in the long bolt on the top of the starter was definitely challenging as a first timer with larger hands.  Almost gave up after 30 minutes of failed attempts while laying on my back.... Had to break for a beer before continuing.

Thank you for your guidance on this.  No more "tapping" or "rocking the car" to get her started.

thanks again

cheers,

luis

Feels awesome....  Only sad bit is learning these things fron YouTube vs my dad.  He doesn't get to wrench on cards any more.... And he lives in Spain.

i have my 8 yr old out with me today getting the car on jacks to install stainless steell brake lines and hopefully a front "hide the plate" front plate mount.  I got a ticket last night on the way home.... To be fair, i already received three warnings from the same officer throughtout the summer... Will need to fab a braket to attach this thing- good thing 8 year olds are creative.

fortunatelly it's now raining here in Seattle, so winter project season is starting ;-)

good times!

I'm not sure if you can see it, but I made a makeshift licence plate bracket on my IM.  I didn't want to drill visible holes in the front bumper, so used some light angle brackets that I attached to the bottom side of it with a couple of small bolts.

I just got the stuff at the local  hardware store.  My fix certainly wasn't elegant, but it did the job.  I thought of using a 'hide the plate' bracket, but couldn't see where I could attach it under the front of the car.

If the bracket is removed, you can't see the holes unless the car is running over you

I installed the show n go hide away manual plate bracket From Altec Products.  i made a simple braket to mount it between the bumper bars... Will take a picture tomorrow... May be easier to explain.

http://altecproducts.com/license-plate-frames/

i had ordered it in August hoping to have something I could mount the plate so that I could remove from sight when desired... I like the "license free front look".    too bad I didn't install it until the day after I got a ticket for not displaying a front license plate.
