and you have provided a significant portion of it, Vince!
Daang, Mango---only 19 mpg? On my last Carlisle trip of 2,493 I saw 27.1 mpg. That was 75 with some runs of 80. (Dellorto 40s). You better wax that pretty car so it's slicker!
i know it needs a tune. i can feel it.
and of course, because i posted it was trouble free it was acting up on my drive into work. turned around to swap cars. I'll take a look tonight.
You old farts crack me up.
Getting all pissy over a thread asking about going with a no-stroked motor.
haha
You guys live and breath these cars and need to take up other hobby's. These replica's aren't the real thing ya know...
/flame suit on
Lightspeed removed is contributing member status and deleted his account. He won't be chatting about this anymore.

He knew everything already...
You never miss an opportunity to be obnoxious do you, Christian?
Again, you missed the point.
I can't speak for anybody but me, but I am of the mindset that when you ask for some help/direction/advice that it is pretty poor form to turn around and be disdainful or condescending to those who take the time to respond and try to help.
Simple courtesy.
Spirited conversation and disagreement about opinions or positions are what makes this enjoyable.
For me, this wasn't about any particular position, vis a vis stroker vs. non-stroker, but about good social graces, even on the internet. Nobody responding to Lightspeed invited insult or derision, you have.
As far as age goes, thankfully grace and civility can be found across that spectrum, with some exceptions like yourself.
I hope the flame suit works.

Ahh shoot.. there I go "missing the point" again.
That's about what I expected.
I deleded my ugly post. No sense adding to an already awful thread.
Children... pshhh
If only he had asked which non-stroker engine to put in his CCW coupe, we'd still be popping corn.
Jack, I can't believe you could say anything ugly.....
Christian, I want to thank you for being hated more than me on the SOC..
I actually hate you also for not showing up at my party with that beauty you call a girlfriend....good thing I saw her earlier that day or I would have been really pissed off.....
Hey Jimbo, good news, I hear the UFC has offered to sponser all future speedster.com get-togethers.
Tom, that made me laugh out loud (not that there's anything wrong with that!). My No. 1 draw to this website is the great folks/friends I've met. No. 2 draw is the entertainment value.
Hazzbin - you already know that just your avatar alone stokes popcorn enjoyment! I like it!
Remember the old Monty Python skit 'Argument Clinic'? That still cracks me up!
Jimmy...no it doesn't!
ARRrrrr, likens to the smell o' spent cannon powder! here abouts,
Man, I stopped drinking beer for a couple days and just realized my car is plastic.
****!
Nospeed is smarter than me!
Waaah!
Danny:
The cure is to start drinking again, consistently, and you'll forget the entire terrible nightmare you just endured. Turn this around and think of your car as being made of an "exotic space age composite material".
Jimmy...no it doesn't!
Yes it does!

DannyP,
So you have what, a $12,000 JR motor in a plastic car? If I had 12K to burn JR would be building it for my 911. So yes, you have the worlds most expensive VW stroker motor, and no, thats not what I am looking for. BTW - I never mentioned GEX, and seriously, is disc brakes the biggest problem I have with this car now?
No. He doesn't have the most expensive engine... Today what we create starts at 15K, lots has changed in the 12 years since I worked with Danny and my prices have doubled. If its a 911 Mezger based engine things start at 22K.
After 12 years and 31K miles, I'd say that Danny has gotten his money's worth from his Raby engine.
Good heavens, I leave you guys alone for a few days and look what you do!
Naughty, naughty boys!!!
angela
Since Vince didn't say it....
Stroke THIS!
Stroke is important, Danny. But never discount the joys of RPM.
angela
LOL Angela, very funny(and dirty!)!!
...or displacement!
did someone mention big jugs.. i mean cylinders?
did someone mention big jugs.. i mean cylinders?
Like the ones found in my T4 based 356 engine?
Or perhaps the jugs that feed the 2.6L beast?
Carb Porn Jake
Carb Porn--good one. LOL!
And woe is xxxking me. I blew my engine the other day. Looks like a head gasket may have gradually gone US and I kept pushing the bugger to see what would happen. Make a long story short, I was in the big City having a few with some friends and on the way home the water temp gauge went sky high. I listened, smelled and wondered all the 20 or so miles on the way home to see if something would seize or not and everything seemed smooth. I parked the bugger at home and all I could hear from the engine compartment was a hissing out the overflow tube. I'm thinking a head gasket leak possibly caused by an earlier such event with the possibility of a warped head in the first place. 17,608 miles on a junkyard $350 motor won't make me complain though. I might toss in my spare junkyard motor over the winter but I'm getting lazy and might just opt for a nice CCR engine for about $3K. Francine just noted that it was three years ago last weekend that we bought and drove the Speedster in Boise, Idaho. Best $6,500 I ever spent. 8,500 miles on it then, 47,818 today. We've sure had our share of fun, seen some sights and met some real nice people.
David,
I'd find the source of that instant temperature spike sooner rather than later. If not it might find you again with the replacement engine.
Your old engine was one of the strongest foundations offered by Subaru in stock form. What you experienced is not characteristic of that base engine.
David,
Depending on the year and model of your Subi, there are a few odd things that can affect the HG and overheating in addition to the normal radiator, water pump, thermostat, drive belts, etc. HG's can be severely affected by electrolysis, so good grounding straps, clean battery terminals, good cabling, proper coolant additive, etc. are important. Good grounds are critical. You will likely be able to tell most of the cause of the HG failure, if that's what it is, when you pull the old gasket and see where it failed and the extent of corrosion. There are several excellent tutorials on HG diagnosis, repair, etc. on the web. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do!
Thanks for the responses, Lads. Jake, this was a gradual phenomenon which occurred over the last month or so and I'll do some deep digging to identify the cause when time allows. For instance, on our trip to Maine in August, the car would run fine at low rpms and low load conditions....like a nice flat road running under 3,200 rpm. Out on the freeway at say 3,600 rpm or so up a long steep hill the temp gauge would predictably climb. Get off the gas and it would go down. I could manage the temp with my gas pedal. The condition gradually got worse to the extent that I described in my first post. I'll check the stat first, rad flow second but I'm betting on a head gasket. Those Soobs have an interesting head gasket torque sequence. Any and all ideas welcome.
David--I hate this for you and hope you will get that Speedster back into long-haul condition soon. No way we are going to allow you to miss Carlisle again this year!!!
David,
The head gasket torquing sequence and procedure is fairly common with modern engines and hardware.
I use Cometic head gaskets in all JR series engines and they work great, even with bores of 102mm and 2.8 liters.
The only engines that really have head gasket issues are the EJ25, their open deck does not support the cylinders very well. This is the reason why we strutted the billet Nikisil cylinders found in the JR28 engine, to add as much support and rigidity to the cylinder as possible.
I'll post some pics of the design later.
Jake, thanks for that info.
David, you too. Sorry for your loss.
Thanks again for the input, Lads. I'm not perturbed one bit. I proved a point to myself and I'm ok with that. This Monday I will close a deal with a Lad on selling my hangar, my share in the flying field, my Christavia and the little lifeboat I converted over the last winter as an experiment all in one shot. Proceeds hopefully go to a Nauset or Cape Dory 28 trawler ( any good ones in your area, diesel only ?) and sticking in a new EJ22 into the Speedster and getting straight to Carlisle next May for sure. I'm up !
