I have a 99 VS speedster(1600cc single solex carb) that starts easily and just finished a 6 hr "shakedown" ride with almost a flawless drive. The only problem was after a 10 minute stop midway though the ride. It started but I could tell it would die if I let off the accelerator so I maintained about 1000 RPM put it in gear and luckily drove fine so I wouldn't be stuck without cell phone reception. After I got home I filled the gas tank and ran fine until I stopped after a 30 minute ride and the same thing happened on two similar occasions. The previous owner suggested I check the automatic choke. To rule it out can I just disconnect the wire that comes from the coil and do a test run? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Disconnecting the wire will prove nothing..... The problem could be fuel related by way of vapor lock, float level, pressure, etc...

If the choke is set up correctly, it will just close at about 50-60 degrees F. (shade tree adjustment) The choke heater pulls the choke open as it warms, and the carb should have a provision to open the choke if the throttle is punched with a cold engine...(passing?)

If the starter is "dragging", when you try to restart, you could have an overheated engine....Most likely causes, timing, lean jets....

Good luck...
Drove the car trying simulate the previous problem and it ran and started fine several times. A small victory but I think I'll change the cut off jet valve anyway and try to figure out if I now have a transaxle leak or brake cylinder leak on the rear right side. Thanks for the help!
