Bob,I was just about to ask a question about that nut and screw on top. I was afraid to mess with it. I only have about 3/4" of play in my steering wheel , but I would like 0". Do you think I'm being too picky? I checked carefully, and that is where the play is. Everything else looks pretty snug. It is pretty close in there and I can only see it from the side. Please let me (us)know how you make out. Also, where did you see it leaking? Good luck. Al
I have now pulled the plugs in three boxes by using a number 10 or 12 sheet metal screw....Find the correct diameter, then thread it into the plug about 1/2 inch or until you "feel" it bottom out...Then pull it out with pliers....To properly fill the box, both plugs are removed, grease/lubricant is pumped into the lowest hole until a stesdy stream emerges from the other hole....Replace plugs....If you lose one or damage one, plastic plugs are readily available at local hardware stores, they probably will look different, but seem to work...
To quote the Bentley:

"The capacity of the (steering) gearbox is 160cc(1/3 pint), and transmission grease is the lubricant used"

The book goes on to say that with wheels straight ahead and the car on the ground, one inch of play is allowable on the outside circumference of the wheel, every 6000 miles this should be checked and adjusted.

The procedure is an entire page of the manual. First you do the axial play, which is the big nut.

Then you do the play between roller and worm(small screw).

Alan, maybe you are a little picky. That was one of the topics of discussion at Carlisle this weekend. I haven't touched mine, it is less than 3/4" of play.

Buy the Bug 66-69 manual, it is all most of us need, unless you have a link-pin front end. It is about 30 bucks.
