steering column u-joints

I read here once upon a time that a Super Beetle u-jointed steering shaft could be fitted. My goal is to mount the steering wheel in a better location.

I bought the Suber shaft, and the splines are too coarse and the OD is too large to fit a T-1 steering box. Do I remember this mod correctly?

Any idea what u-joints will fit.

I used a Flaming River tilt column and two Borgeson u-joints on my Manx build.

Borgeson tells me that they do not have a joint to fit the Beetle T-1 steering box with a 60 spline x .638 OD input shaft

Your correct. They don't have one that fits the VW application. I modified one of their 015221 U-joints.

The modifications I did were:

1. I carefully enlarged the hole slightly to allow the joint to slide over the shaft.
2. I drilled and tapped a hole 90 degrees apart from the set screw that was already there.
3. I ground two flats on the steering box shaft that corresponded to the two set scews

I used locktite on both set screws. It works very well. No issues with rotation on the shaft, and with the locktite I never saw one loosening.

I was thinking of using a .625 smooth bore joint and machining to .638 of the VW box input shaft. TIG weld the joint to the box and use splines on the other end on the joint so that it can be disassembled.
