Steering Damper

Any suggestions on how to tighten up the steering play? I have about 4 inches of play in my wheel.

The steering box has an adjusting screw and lock nut on the top of it. Your shop manual will tell you the correct procedure for adjustment.

I've read there are two adjustable screws. The second is hidden. Does anyone know for sure?

I agree that 4 inches indicates a serious problem; I would not drive a car with that much play until the problem was resolved. New steering boxes are available, but also check front suspension/chassis mounts, steering box mounts, tie rods, front suspension trailing arms, etc.

I just got the car from VS. There may not be quite 4, but there is a significant amount of play.

Check the endcap and bolt that holds the steering worm in the case it may have worked lose, I think the nut is 36 mm and the treaded cap incert uses a 17mm alen wrenck. It been a few years sence I rebuilt my Dune buggies box, but I think there is a lug socket in most Vw tool kits that fits in it,

According to my old Vw tech manual ,(If )? adjusting is all you need you will first losen the pivot arber tension with the the 17 mm nut and set screw then reset the inplay on the steering worm at the 36 mm nut and incert threaded plug untill it is just snug, but steering turns without binding. then reload the pivot arber tension with the set screw . with the steering at lock, then tighen the lock nuts. I think thats the right way
