Can anyone tell me the normal distance from the dash where our gauges are to the steering wheel rim ? Sorry but I am not using the stock steering wheel from my old VW but hope the one I will be using is the correct distance for the proper feel. My non stock steering column needs to be fit to the right distance for the wood wheel I am also using. Thanks for the Help....

With your hands on the steering wheel in the usual 9 o'clock/3 o'clock positions, you should be able to reach out a couple of fingers and pull on your headlight (left) or wiper (right) switches without removing your hand from the wheel.
In other words, the outside centerline of the wheel rim nearest to the headlight switch (or wiper, on the other side) should be around 5" from the dash surface.
That's about where the original 356's had them, and it works for us, too.
Thank You for your help Gordon
Those measurements sounds about right. Mine is a tiny bit different, but I'm running a spacer and a Mike Lempert VDM replica wheel. Mine is mahogany.

I think the ebony one went to an man...no.. an urban legend in Fresno.
Steering wheel placement is a personal taste thing. Gordon's placement is a good choice for him-- but with ape-arms, I prefer to be significantly closer to the eyebrow with the wheel.
Stan, I know you can get just about anything done by IM, I got my seat lowered, moved back etc etc... but ... First time I ever heard of the missing link, arm adjustment steering wheel fitment.... I have to ask H about it
Has anyone ever used an "I DID IT" steering column in their Speedster?.....Bruce
