I noticed today that my sterrig wheel seems a little loose... Not the steering. Olumn but the steering wheel. It moves up and down a quarter inch like it is in need of tightening? I have the white banjo style steerig wheel - seems like a cheaper plastic version. Any thoughts? How would one pop that horn button off to see if the nut is loose???

Also check the rag-joint that connects the steering shaft to the steering box by looking in LF wheel well. OEM is a fabric reinforced black rubber ~3" coupler which is mounted with 4 bolts. It could be worn out or someone replaced with inferior red poly one (which cracks). Or it could also be the bearing/spacer in column.

It can depend which way your wheel moves.

If you're feeling a lateral up and down movement at the wheel I'd look at the bushings in the column or a loose mounting nut, but if you mean that you can move the wheel in and out, toward you and away from you, it could well be a bad rag connector.

Ditto Wolfgang on the red eurothane - big marketing hype for not-so-great parts.

Some horn puttons just pry out but some need to turn and disengage. Some even have screws underneath with spring tensioning. Not sure how those banjo ones work.
Make sure the shaft snapring hasnt come out of the grove just below the wheel and I added a 3/4 locknot washer on top of my wheel to help keep it tight . If your is a rack and pinon like mine the lower end of the shaft U joint could be lose .

But it could be a bearing falling apart like the guys are saying ..

So heck just check it out..
