Part of the fun in owning one of these cars is adding doodads.
Whether it's modifying the drivetrain, changing the wheels/tires, modifying the suspension...yeah, done all that.
Another area that has room for a personal touch is the steering wheel.
There are a lot of choices; Nardi, Momo, Petri, Derrington, Les Leston, Moto Lita. Banjo or Wood, Dished or Flat. Large or small, fat or skinny... you see my point.
I experimented with a few. I started with a Nardi Personal, then tried a Momo. Dale Bates gave me an Izumi that he picked up for practically nothing at Bugorama.
After seeing Lane Anderson's wheel I decided to commission a custom wheel from Mike Lempert. He was open to collaborating on a design so I sent him a deposit and began the process.
I decided the the design needed to flow with the interior so I opted for drilled holes over slots. I wanted the wood to work with my unusual color scheme, so I chose Bolivian Rosewood. Fifteen inch diameter, no dish. Nardi pattern so I could use my existing horn button and adapter.
It was a long wait but, thanks to Lane, I have my new wheel. After a few modifications the wheel is in. I love the looks of it.
How about the rest of you? Sporting anything unusual in the steering department?

Terry, I like your treatment of the adapter, and it really does do Penny justice to have a classy helm installed. I always liked the old one, but you've got a real nice look going on there, and she keeps getting better looking with age.

No such luck for the Sloppy Jalopy. Some guy named Grant made its wheel, then carved his name into it and ruined the vintage-racer aesthetic. Crap job, all the way 'round. ;)

I was confronted with having to make my own wheel. Purely by accident I found Lempert (lucky for me!). I've been cranking through twisties on his art for about 8 years. Here is a link from his website: http://www.pbase.com/mdlempert/image/31905133

I got my one-off custom wheel in a month or two -- but that was before he became the hottest ticket in the industry. Now I guess if you want one you gotta wait.
