Fellow owners. I have an 01 intermeccanica that has the original stereo in it. While it looks good, cassette player and all, I can barely hear it and since I left my cassettes in high school I would like to update to an ipod compatible system. What type of stereo do you have and what do you think my options are? I will probably update speakers, stereo, etc., but would like to keep it at least "period compatible."

You probably want one capable of playing MP3 CDs with an auxiliary input for iPod/iphone/MP3 player. USB flash drive support is nice too. Get RCA outputs so you can add an amplifier for Steppenwolf's "Born to be wild". I bought a JVC model supposedly $649 retail from Crutchfield's for $109. It had theft-deterrent removeable face plate. Plus support for SD Memory chip. Face is tasteful silver and black.

Where are your speakers now? Hidden under dash, front kick panels or front of door panels will enable you to hear it.
I've got a Pioneer DEH-5200

AM/FM/Serius-XM/CD/IPOD (with IP cable attached). Plug in the IPOD or XM head and it's then controlled from the radio head (which, BTW, detaches from the dash). IPOD and XM can be hidden anywhere - you never touch them.

Something like 60 watts per channel to just a pair of 7" multi-horns in the doors.

Puts out enough sound to hear nicely at turnpike speeds with mushy ear plugs in (to cut down on the wind noise). I've got different EQ presets for earplugs and non-earplugs.

I use it a lot on longer trips (which is about anywhere in South Carolina). It has bluetooth capablity, but I've not yet used that. I run my GPS through it via the IP cable - kinda handy then, because the IPOD (connected to the GPS) gets muted when the GPS wants to tell me something (I think ya aughta turn left...iff'n ya feel like it....)

It's also cool at cruise-ins to blast out some 50's Doo-Wop...

I'm jus' sayin......

Ron, be careful with that. We public safety guys would warn against earphones for the same reason we warn against talking on a cell phone or texting.
If you can't hear what's going on around you, it could be the end of Ron. Keep the volume to just what you need it at to hear the music, if you're driving the Speedster, okay? We kinda like you 'round here.
