I was driving my 356 and it seemed as though the transmission was not as responsive as it used to be only yesterday.

I proceeded on the hwy doing about 3000 rpm no problems...

When I exited and was in the down town core I noticed coming out of 1st gear was kind of ruff.

As I continued home I have to stop at various traffic lights and stop signs.

As I stopped and started out of 1st gear from each stop it became more and more difficult to accelerate out of 1st into second.

I nearly did not make it home!!!

By the time I arrived home the stick shift (coming out of 1st) was violently shaking!!!

Anyone have any idea what's happening ?? What's the probable cause??

Any educated guesses are welcome

Thanks
Gerry

From your description:
"By the time I arrived home the stick shift (coming out of 1st) was violently shaking!!!"
It sounds like the problem is not with the internal parts of the trans but external. like the mounts.
the shifter in the car is mounted (almost) directly to the shifter (hockey stick)comming out of the trans. For the stick shift to violently shake, then the whole transmission has to violently shake. This all means that the trans may be loose in it's mounts.
Check the mounts, there are three. One in the front and two at the rear (near bell housing).

Gerry,
Any luck in finding out what is wrong? I got mine back together last nite (with a new cable and bowdin tube) and I shakes violently when letting the clutch out in first gear. Didn't do it before and it works fine taking off from a stop in 2nd gear or reverse. Shifts well between gears and doesn't pop out of gear on the overrun. The Bowdin tube has a little droop in it but not as much as recommended. I guess you have to shim the rear end of it to increase the sag.
