I really don't know if I'll run into this opinion or not when I list it on ebay it crossed my mind to convert it to manual. I have another complete speedster with manual drivetrain so I'm going to think about it, any thoughts?

Jane, I think most people want a manual in a speedster or roadster because that is what makes it so much fun to drive. Have you looked into how much it would cost to convert it.? I don't think it would-be cheap. Your car is awesome. I love the head light grills. Although less people Are looking for an automatic I do remember one going pretty fast on this site a year or so ago. I watch every sale all the time on this site. This is really the only section I look at. I think it may be more trouble than its worth to convert it.

Chris, seriously, that's not complicated or expensive swap for the deal Jane's offering on that car.
I agree that a stick is infinitely more fun to drive, so you'd want to swap transmissions -- but if that's an automatic-stick, the doodads you delete to remove (the shifter and vacuum/spring setup) don't get replaced with anything when you revert to a manual.
If anything, taking the vacuum pieces off unclutters the engine compartment, and the springs that make the pedals work together would just get removed from the front section of the tunnel. That's just a couple bolts and MAYBE a tiny bit of welding away from easy.
If the fine folks at IM included a clutch tube in the tunnel, that auto-stick can be swapped out without welding anything. If not, welding in a clutch tube -- using the '74 auto-stick Super Beetle as the example -- would be pretty easy to do. IMs have great mechanical access to the parts which make them work, unlike a do-it-yourself, shortened Beetle chassis conversion.
Parts-wise, you'd need to lose the cable attached to IM's shifter, have some very minor fabrication done to seal off a couple oil lines, install a different oil pump than the one used for the vacuum system, a different clutch assembly and different pedals. I have heard that a hydraulic clutch system makes this really uncomplicated, but I can't speak to that. Maybe Lane Anderson could, or Henry himself.
Lane just made the hydraulic leap in his Beck, and I'm sure Henry will remember that Roadster.
My chassis was originally an IRS auto-stick, and everything about the car is now swing-axle and manual. It was harder to delete the IRS suspension components than to replace the gearbox, and my transmission pieces sold for more than a stock replacement would have cost.
For thirty grand -- considering how optioned that one is, and how hard IM Roadsters are to find for that kind of money, the shape Jane's car appears to be in AND that she's at least a little knowledgeable about its history -- that looks like a pretty good deal. Transmissions aren't that expensive, and there are many places in this area that can do the work for short money.
Bonus, the auto-stick folks love those transmissions AND they're hard to source in working order. You'd probably do well to locate one of them (via TheSamba) and make a deal for your manual in trade for parts and labor at a reputable shop. It's certainly possible.

I feel terrible pointing that out, but asking someone for a second set of eyes to proofread the ad might help you sell the car. Thanks Cory. The first three quarters of your ad were Greek to Me. I just drive the cars, wash them wax, them and drive them. Then I park them in my garage, drink beer and stare at them... I'm not a motor head. But I appreciate all that stuff you wrote...Jane I actually showed your ad to my wife to show her that house in the background... What a setting!!! I hope that's your house. If so,good for you, it's awesome! I didn't notice any typos when I read the ad. I was too focused on the car and the setting....good luck.

by the way the automatic trans in the roadster is from a late model Volkswagen Vanagon but of course re-geared.

Tom, I wanted to have true racing axles instead of CVs, a limited-slip differential and welded spider gears, wider tires and -- primarily -- because I didn't want to buy another chassis.
I have a 2006 Intermeccanica Speedster for sale (Black and loaded) the car is in Dallas and it has 8500 miles. It is a car show winner and can be seen in Henry's site under sold pre owned (it is the 2006 build).
