Yeah, I was looking at my Mountain Bike seat post and thinking the same thing. Might make parking on a public street problematic. Many cops are impounding vehicles with expired or absent tags. Unless it's covered, a missing plate might attract the wrong kind of attention.

So, how's this? When you park on a public street, remove your plate, cover your car, and make sure your license number is stenciled somewhere on the cover.

No, to fashion a quick release plate assemble???

Mike,

You could make a quick mold of your plate and pour a fiberglass resin splash-cast version of it. Then paint it up like the original, then stain it with wood stain and dirt and attach THAT to your car, after you remove the "real/good" one when parking.

It'll just look like an old dirty year of manufacture plate and nobody will want it.

Maybe?

Mike:

It seems you are bi-local- Calabasas and somewhere up north (San Rafael?). Did the theft take place in the Northwest San Fernando Valley? You might want to check the bar area at King's Fish House. They have a collection of old plates on the wall (and the original of Von Dutch's pick-up truck tailgate too).

Also, I understand there is an alarm that uses a pager like gizmo to alert the owner when tampering or theft is in progress. You might want to check it out.

Sorry about your misfortune.

Thanks for the suggestions.

(Bill) Only my heart is in San Rafael. I have been checking all possibilities local to Calabasas; ebay, thesamba.com, etc. My two-way radio set-up is working pretty well. I've had to run out to the car on a few false alarms, jets going by overhead enroute to Pt. Mugo, but I did come out to find a few people gathered around admiring, and from the prints on the door, one or another of them had hands on it, so I 'sleep better' when it's parked.

I am actually going to order a second repli-plate pretty soon. Not to tempt fate, but the more local area law enforcement that get used to seeing my (current) blue/white plate, the more likely I'll get stopped when I put the yellow plate back on. No lag time.

Unfortunately, with the custom Competition Motors frame and tag toppers, it looks great but is very conspicuous, so its a risk/reward type of thing. The most upsetting thing is I'm going to have to take it in for repainting behind the plate where the top screws did damage.

Hi Guys,

Just a suggestion to prevent this from happening:

I added a second license plate bracket to the top of the plate (bolted to the fiberglass...of course ;-) I also used 4 "anti-theft" bolts and nuts to secure my plates. My 3rd brake light (LED) is on my license plate as well as the plate light.
I once had my office broken into. Had the knob locked, plus two dead
bolts. Not being able to get past the locks, the thieves merely kicked the door in, causing several hundred dollars to replace the frame and the door. After that, I kissed off the dead-bolts and just locked the door with the lock on the knob. If someone wants to get in from now on, let them do it without their causing a whole bunch of damage, and let the insurance take care of anything that is stolen. If some cretin wants my plate, I would rather just let the little bastard take it, instead of screwing up the paint/glass or taking it out on the rest of the car out of sheer cruel spite.
