Straight cut gears require less HP to turn the cam, so they are useful for 'eeking' out the last few drops of HP that an engine can supply. Their use is very popular in race cars where engine displacement is limited, Super V and Off Road racing.

Also Straight Cut gears reduce the side load on the cam thrust bearings, when using HEAVY valve springs (Super Heavy Duty dual springs or even the rare triple springs).

Most of the guys on CLF just want the loud whine of the straight gears. Sounds cool to some and makes people think that they might have a large CC engine.
