The two top support bows in my vinyl top are sheathed in flat vinyl tubes adhered to the underside of the top. With the top up and locked they keep the bows in the correct position, but they're under tension.... This adhesive has given up the ghost.

Home Depot assured me that Weldwood Contact Cement, the strongest glue they have, would do the job...and it did for about three days!!!

The discolored residue from the original adhesive are uniform width bands such as tape strips would make. Is there a tough as nails double backed tape that will do the job?

Not having a Speedster I can't say for sure since I can't see the exact application, but I've been very surprised by 'Gorilla' brand products.

Their duct tape's strong enough to hold a marriage together, so if they have a double-sided tape or a spray adhesive, I'd be partial to trying them first.

Also available at Home Depot (here in Canada) though, so if you've had Home Depot's finest already, then this may not fit the bill.

I would call Vintage Speedsters and ask what they originally used. Gorilla glue will become brittle and may damage the top. Double sided tape may show an outline of it on top. I would have thought contact cement was the right choice.

Hey Carl
I have the Glue.

I'd drive by an upholstery shop and ask them what they use.. They use a contact cement which should be readily available at most auto paint supply shops (FinishMaster, etc.)

I used some great stuff back when I restored my original 356. If it's used properly it should be what you're looking for.

Hope this helps,
Ted

Ha! You've used the duct tape, then!  See what I mean?!

WOW!!...From product promotion videos HH-66 figuratively "welds" vinyl together, waterproof seams under all conditions, and can even replace needle stitching!

Attempted to order through Amazon but a confusing hassle trying to re-establish a forgotten password...I don't know what a bookseller is doing selling glue anyway!

Found a vendor with a simplified order form, Veneer Supplies, and ordered a pint at $12.50 (less than Amazon's price) but with US Ground shipping and "handling" (duh???) the total is $26.62...So I'll skip a couple of Denny's Lumber Jack breakfast platters!
