What are VW distributor bodies made of?

What are GM HEI distributor bodies made of?

Some models of VW distributor bodies are iron, some are aluminum.

I,ve had steel, cast iron, aluminum, and pot metal (zinc) VW dist. bodies show up over the years....

The VW distributor body is a double vac unit from a 1973, the HEI is out of a 1976 Chevy Monza. Does this help narrow things down a smidge?

Oh the VW isn't cast iron, that's for sure, no need for a magnet.

The VW distributor body is just the basic "everyone has one" mid 70's variety. Looks like aluminum, but you never know. The GM is like every GM HEI body. I want to weld them together, just wondering if anyone knows what they're made of. Worried a smidge about a magnesium mishap . . .

I could hit TheSamba I suppose, they seem to have a depth of info, I just run into too many know-it-alls during my searches over there.

I had a GM 4 cylinder HEI on a type 1 turbo engine in one of my old sand rails. If I remember correctly, all that needs to be changed is the gear, replaced by the slot. Don't quote me,.

The old Robert Bosch distributor was cast iron i have one here somewhere its badly worn on the degreeing cams 1959 High preformance bus distributor if i was told correctly.

I don't know how far you can take a distributor apart, but isn't magnesium significantly lighter than aluminum? Noticeably, like 25 to 30 percent?
