I'm about to do a twin turbo 2.5 Subaru and 915 gearbox.

In Japan it is uneconomic to register a car more than 4 years old so they are exported or more commonly broken up and sold as parts. Here in Thailand I can buy the engine c/w Suby box for 1200.00 USD with usually 80,000 Km. These are not as common as Toyotas and I need to get the wrecker to special order one for be but no big deal

Makes sense for me to go this route.
Robert, have you intertained the idea of making your Subie conversion a mid-engine by placing the engine ahead of the transmission like a Spyder 550? Specialty Autoworks does this but it does eliminate the rear seat area. This gives you better weight distribution. I don't know how the shift lever is setup but maybe one of the other SAW owner can explain it how it's done. My SAW should be done shortly but I'm have the Subaru Automatic installed.
I would do a mid engine chassis but my problem is that I must retain the Beetle VIN number, so I am stuck with rear engine. Best I can do is retain the rear frame section that carries the VIN and fabricate a tube front section with A-arm front suspension and rack and pinion.

If I could go mid engine, I would use the Rorty Design chassis.
