Suby Fuel pump

Depending on your state, this should normally not be an issue as a California fuel pump and Federal fuel pump both run the same amount of fuel pressure. The issue is whether or not you live in California. If you do, then I would suggest using a California pump as these are designed to comply with California emissions laws. The California pump will likely have some kind of an additional plug that is for the fuel vapor pressure sensor. If you do not live in California, this should not be an issue for you.

If the motor in the car is a California motor, even though you're living in Ohio, the ECU is probably mapped as a California motor. I imagine putting an EPA rated pump versus a CARB (California Air Resources Board) rated pump is going to trigger the Check Engine light. I'd check and see if you could put in an EPA rated pump and remap the ECU for less than what it'd cost to get a CARB rated pump. Maybe a call to the guys at Outfront Motor Sports. On a side note, my daughter was told her catalytic converter was bad so I started looking for a replacement. An EPA catalytic converter for her car was under $200.00. A CARB rated catalytic converter was close to $1,000.00. I opted for a new O2 sensor for just under $100.00 and that was the problem. I imagine an EPA rated pump is going to cost a lot less than a CARB rated pump.

Thanks, Robert! I ordered a used pump off eBay... we'll see how it goes.  When I do a google search, I occasionally see a pump assembly that has a 3rd line.   The pump in my car only has 2, so I'm thinking it  is not a California emissions pump.   Fingers crossed.

@Jethro I see you got your answer.  We use Walboro pumps, FYI.  The ECU won't know the difference, it just knows when to turn it on/cycle it...

@aircooled EPA's official stance on JDM motors is that they are OFF ROAD use only. Since they are not USDM built and are not certified for DOT or EPA standards, they are illegal for road use.  There are some states that don't run engine numbers and wouldn't know the difference, while there are others that DO know the difference and it can be a big issue.  This is why we spend the extra money and use only USDM engines/ECUs in our builds.

I have a walboro pump as well in my Subie install. They are rather reasonably priced compared to some bosch models.  I keep a spare unit as it is just too cheap an insurance to be stuck having to order another pump from a supplier and wait before being back on the road.
