I am looking for a place to take my "new" speedster for a repair (bought last June from Kirk@Vintage, 1500 miles now) - it's making some noises from the rear that I can't diagnose, and the local shop won't touch it. Not a surprise! Must not be enough electronics in there or something - can't plug it into the shop computer for diagnosis...

Anyway, I am in the Reston/Sterling/Ashburn Virginia area and am looking for a recommendation for a shop if anyone knows of a good one.

Please help me get back on the road!

Much appreciated.

Thanks,
Gerry Campbell

You shouldn't feel that worried Gerry. Have you tried listening for the noises to tackle the situation yourself? With air cooled VW's things are pretty straightforward and if you're mechanically inclined you'll do alright with the factory service manual and a couple of other books and/or videos. Have you followed the suggested maintenance schedule? (first engine oil change at 300 miles, first transaxle fluid change at 600 miles, second oil change and first valve adjustment at 1,000, third oil change and second valve adjustment at 3,000 and so on). Sometimes people tend to shy away from them because they're getting scarcer but let me tell you, they're very easily serviced; try it and you'll be surprised, plus, you've got the help and support not only from Kirk but from us here too. That's what this is all about. Good luck with your situation and we hope it's something minor, let us know what's happening.
Ricardo - Yep, I'm comfortable with things mechanically - it's more a matter of the amount of time I have to devote to it. I went over all of the basics - it doesn't look to be something that I can fix in my garage with the tools I have and a few books. It's still under the VS warranty, so I want someone with a more trained eye/ear to look into it.

Alan - Thanks - I will track it down. Much appreciated.

Anyone happen to know the name of the shop/people Alan is suggesting?

Thanks,
G
